Sonic made history as the first video game character to star in the famed Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. He debuted in the 1993 parade and remained the only game character to fly the skies until Nintendo commissioned the Pikachu float in 2001. Music from Sonic the Hedgehog Boom could be heard in the broadcast. In addition to being the first video game character, the float was also one of the larger ones at its debut. Unfortunately, the balloon crashed into a lamppost just south of Columbus Circle, injuring an off-duty police officer and a child. This balloon was one of two that crashed that year, the other being Rex from We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story. Despite this, the balloon was allowed to re-appear in subsequent years. It made appearances up until 1997, though archival footage from 1994 was used for that year's broadcast due to high winds.
