The Hoverboard[2] is an object that appears in the Sonic Boom series. They are a form of hovering skateboards that are used for transportation and racing.

Description[]

The Hoverboards are skateboard-based equipment which, like their name implies, are capable of hovering above ground or flying through midair. They are highly maneuverable, capable of making sharp 180 degree turns and pulling off acrobatic stunts. They can also move at high speeds, though they are not as fast as Sonic the Hedgehog.[1] Using them effectively requires a significant deal of skills and focus however.[3]

The Hoverboards come in various designs, from rustic to high-tech. They can also be fitted with armaments which can be deployed while riding them.[3]

History[]

TV series[]

Season one[]

SB S1E01 Tails hoverboard speed

Tails riding his Hoverboard, from "The Sidekick".

The Hoverboards were used by for the first stage of a race between Fastidious Beaver, Tails and Dr. Eggman to see who was worthy of being Sonic's sidekick. Following a tough trip through the jungle, the contestants that were left discarded their Hoverboards for the next stage of the race.[3] Eggman would afterward put his own custom Hoverboard on display in his lair.[4] Sonic and Tails later had a Hoverboard race when they stumbled upon Gogoba Village. Returning home, Sonic and Tails used their Hoverboards to stop some Badniks when the Gogobas, who had followed them home, got in their way.[1]

The Hoverboards would also surface in the Mirror Dimension, where the Knuckles of that reality used them to rescue the Amy of that reality and damage Octopus Bot.[5]

Season two[]

TS on hoverboards

Tails, Knuckles and Amy riding their Hoverboards, from "Mister Eggman".

Keeping his Hoverboard in his possession, Dr. Eggman continued to have it on display in his lair.[6] When Team Sonic later had a boring period of peace, Tails, Knuckles and Amy would goof off by riding on their Hoverboards while Sonic dragged them around using the Blue Force One.[7] Some time afterward, Sonic and Tails goofed off by having Knuckles' monster truck drag them around while they rode their Hoverboards, although this soon led to an accident. The boys later repeated their stunt with the Hoverboards after learning a minor lesson in responsibility.[8]

Knuckles eventually had Tails and his vehicle drag him around while he rode his Hoverboard. However, when Tails' car trip turned into a race against Sonic, Knuckles would crash into several things before falling off his Hoverboard and getting dragged along the ground for a while.[9]
