The Hoverby Mk II[1] (パタバタ[2] Patabata?, lit. “Pata-Bata”), also known as just Hoverby,[3] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, butterfly-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman, as well as an upgraded variant of the Pata-Bata.

The Hoverby Mk IIs are based on butterflies. They have pink metallic bodies with wide eyes, yellow feelers and proboscis, and twin gray rotary engines on the sides.

Overview[]

SS act 2 02

A Hoverby Mk II in Knuckles' Chaotix.

In Knuckles' Chaotix, the Hoverby Mk IIs only appear in Speed Slider. In gameplay, they usually stop at one place and then move to the alternate direction, repeating their flight pattern. They lack any actual weapons, rendering them mostly harmless. They can be destroyed by a single Spin Jump. Upon destroying a Hoverby Mk II, it will release a Dark Ring.

Powers and abilities[]

The Hoverby Mk IIs have the ability to fly.

A Hoverby Mk II, from Sonic Universe #72.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Hoverby Mk IIs are members of the Eggman Empire's Badnik Horde. Having been left behind on Isolated Island by Dr. Eggman, they were reprogrammed by Dr. Ellidy to serve as his guards alongside other Badniks

IDW Publishing[]

A Hoverby, from Sonic the Hedgehog #5.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, a group of Hoverbys attacked Sonic and Espio in a mountainous region, only to end up being destroyed by the two heroes. More Hoverbys would not long after try to attack Windmill Village, but Sonic and the Chaotix were able to stop them.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly, this Badnik shares its Japanese name, Pata-Bata, with another Badnik. The Hoverby Mk II is likely a related upgraded model of this Badnik, due to their similar features.
