Toad (キノピオ Kinopio?) is a character that appears in the Mario series. He is a Toad, Princess Peach's attendant and a long-time protector of the Mushroom Kingdom. He is actually a singular character among an entire species of look-alikes (much like the Yoshi is to the Yoshi species). He usually takes on the role of a supporting character who tries to help Mario and Luigi on their adventures; however, he has occasionally been a prominent hero in his own right as well.
Toad has appeared in multiple crossover titles alongside Sonic the Hedgehog and his cast, in particular the Mario & Sonic subseries.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games[]

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Toad makes a few non-playable appearances in both the Wii and Nintendo DS version of the game. Together with Cream, Espio and Charmy, he mainly appears as one of the referees in several events. He primarily calls out fouls and initiates races in the Athletics events. He can also frequently be seen together with Cream as one of the two judges in the background for different event matches, such as the Fencing and Table Tennis events, where he can be seen watching the competitors.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[]
In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Toad appears as a non-playable character in both the Wii and Nintendo DS version of the game, reprising his role as a referee. In both games, Toad is the only Toad with red spots to appear in the games (despite the numerous other Toads present in the audience).
In the Wii version of the game, Toad makes an addition appearance during the Festival Mode, where he serves as one of the scorekeepers alongside Cream. In Festival Mode, Toad acts as well as one of the main hosts (alongside Cream) where he announces the day's event.

In Adventure Tours mode in the Nintendo DS version of the game, Toad also appears as an interactable, non-playable character. In this mode, Toad reside in Frostown. The first person Sonic and Mario come across during their mission to restore the winter environment to the Winter Olympics after Dr. Eggman and Bowser kidnapped the Snow Spirits, Toad excitedly joins the duo's party after they speak to him, acting mainly as their guide on their adventure. However, Toad admits himself that he will not be able to do much once he agrees to join them. In addition, during the ending, an unlockable photo of Toad with many of the other hosts alongside him can be obtained.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[]
In the Wii version and Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Toad appears as a non-playable character.
Toad and Cream host the London Party, from the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
In the Wii version of the game, Toad serves as a common referee, alongside Cream, Espio, and Charmy. Toad in particular serves as the referee for personalized games such as the "Dream Equestrian" event where he has the players bring back Yoshi Eggs through a series of horse riding events. He, along with Cream and Cheese, also hosts the London Party, in which he gives out information to the players about various events, such as characters appearing on the map, scores and upcoming events. As hosts, he and Cream also both judge the players and often give them their daily duties for that mode in order to achieve stickers and points. Toad and Cream also give out the final scores of the events to the players as well. Toad will also occasionally send the player different pieces of mail. In addition, a Mii costume based on Toad can also be unlocked in the game by playing against a friend five times in Single Event Mode.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, Toad appears as the referee in different events alongside other Toads. He also appears on the results screens in medleys. He also makes an appearance in the game's story mode. During the events of this mode, Toad appeared in the Main Stadium where he was among the first to witness the appearance of the Phantasmal Fog in London. While investigating the fog, Toad ran into two fog clones of Sonic and Mario, who knocked the confused Toad out. Sometime later, Toad met Mario and Luigi, who had come to the Main Stadium to find the fog's creators. As Toad tried explaining his meeting with the fog clones to Mario and Luigi, fog clones of Sonic and Tails appeared. After Mario and Luigi took them out, Toad decided to accompany the duo on their investigation, with Omochao coming along to assist them. Eventually, the group found a Fog Machine guarded by Dry Bowser and a Dry Bones, whom Mario and Luigi took care off before destroying the Fog Machine, thus clearing the Main Stadium of fog. Toad, Mario and Luigi then departed for Hyde Park where more fog was and where Peach could possibly be.
After finding Peach in perfect condition and learning that she, her group and Rouge had already cleared the fog from the park, Toad, Mario and Luigi headed to the British Museum. There, they met Sonic and Tails, who agreed to join their mission after defeating some Fog imposters. As Toad realized that Sonic and Tails were up to speed about the fog, they agreed to find the local Fog Machine. However, Toad ended up getting left behind. He soon after found Eggman Nega though, whom the group defeated after learning that he was guarding a Fog Machine. After Eggman Nega left, they found another Fog Machine that Sonic and Mario destroyed, thus clearing the museum of fog. Thanks to Tails, the group then discovered that Dr. Eggman had to have a magical Fog urn that was creating the Phantasmal Fog. Soon after though, Espio and Charmy came and revealed that Eggman and Bowser's henchmen were causing trouble in four different places. The heroes thus split up to handle the problems, with Toad coming with Mario. At Eton Dorney, they found Wario getting ready to destroy a Fog Machine. However, when the machine was revealed to be a hologram, Toad and Mario followed Eggman, who was in the area, to the real Fog Machine. There, they saw Wario and Waluigi take care of the machine and both Eggman and Metal Sonic, thus clearing the area of the fog. Reuniting then with the other heroes and Omega in the Main Stadium, Toad and the others witnessed the return of the Phantasmal Fog, except that it was now denser than ever. After the others took take came of some Fog imposters threating Cream, Toad and the others decided to head to Stonehenge to find a clue to the fog after Omega recovered some information on it from his damaged memory. Before leaving though, Toad received a walkie-talkie from Omochao to keep them in contact with the Main Stadium. At Stonehenge, the group ran afoul with an enemy Magikoopa, who ended up restoring Omega's memory. Omega then revealed to Toad and the others that Eggman and Bowser had him unseal the Fog urn here to activate it and then bring it to them in Big Ben. Knowing now where the villains were hiding, Toad and the others headed to Big Ben after finding the lid for the Fog urn so they could seal the Phantasmal Fog again.

After getting closer to Big Ben (where the source of Phantasmal Fog was especially great), Toad and Omega could no longer endure the effects of the fog. As such, Toad gave the walkie-talkie to Tails and wished Sonic, Mario, Luigi and Tails good luck. Returning to the Main Stadium, Toad told Mario and Sonic through the walkie-talkie that the other areas had been cleared of the fog by the other athletes. After the heroes beat the villains and sealed the fog away, Toad accepted Eggman and Bowser's requests to participate in the Olympic Games (their lack of invitations to the Olympic Games had been their motivator to fog up London). Afterward, Toad took part in the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games
In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, a badge of Toad can also be obtained from the badge machine.
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games[]
In Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, for the events that are played without the GamePad, Toad will appear during the Mario & Sonic Live segment and host said events, with Toad commenting at the start and end of these events. Also, a Mii costume based on Toad can be unlocked in the game by playing Medley Mania at least once.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games[]
In Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Toad is a playable character in the Wii U version of the game, which marks the first time he is playable in the Mario & Sonic series. He also appears as an opponent in the arcade addition of the game.
In the Wii U version of the game, Toad is a guest character that is only playable in the 4x100m Relay event. To unlock him, the player must defeat him in a tournament match. Also, a Mii costume set based on Toad can be unlocked in the game. However, it must be collected in two separate parts, each with their own stat changes.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[]
In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Toad reprises his role from previous Mario & Sonic games by appearing as a referee in different events.

In the Nintendo Switch version of the game, Toad appears as one of the characters in the story mode. In this mode, Toad brought Sonic and Mario a gaming system called "Tokyo '64" addressed to them from an anonymous sender. Just as Luigi arrived though, Bowser showed up, with Dr. Eggman close by, causing Luigi to get frightened and drop the Tokyo '64 he was holding and turn it on, causing Toad, Sonic, Mario, Eggman and Bowser to get sucked into the Tokyo '64. Inside the heavily pixelated world of the Tokyo '64, Toad, Sonic and Mario learned that the Tokyo '64 was a trap made by Eggman and Bowser, but it had backfired by sucking the villains in too. Although Eggman claimed there was no way out, he convinced Bowser to compete in the Olympic Games featured inside the Tokyo '64 so they could win gold medals, prompting the heroes to follow them so Mario and Sonic could compete in the digital Olympic Games too. After Sonic and Mario had beaten Eggman and Bowser in two events, Toad heard Eggman mention that winning gold medals was the key to escape the Tokyo '64. After relaying this information to Sonic and Mario, Toad's group tried to confront Eggman and Bowser, only to discover that they had snuck away. Thankfully, a Pecky told Toad that Eggman flew out west, so Sonic decided to chase him, while Mario and Toad looked for Bowser. Although the duo eventually found Bowser, he got away while Toad talked to Mario. Reuniting with Sonic, the heroes reported that their foes had gotten away and were probably meeting somewhere.
Eventually finding Eggman and Bowser in the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, the heroes came face-to-face with the villains. After Toad made Eggman admit that there was a way out of the Tokyo '64, Sonic told him and Bowser that they that would not get away with the gold medals. Mario proceeded to challenge Eggman, which he won. After Sonic later beat Bowser in an event, Toad reunited with Sonic and Mario, who revealed to them that he had seen someone who looked like Eggman head off in a taxi, prompting Sonic to go after it. However, upon stopping the taxi, the heroes discover that "Eggman" was actually a Picky impersonating him. However, after the Picky mentioned a big flame, the heroes realized they could find Eggman and Bowser at the Olympic Cauldron in the National Stadium. They then decide to stay back and figure out what they were up to.
Eventually, Toad, Sonic and Mario heard Eggman say that by inserting fourteen gold medals into fourteen keyholes underneath the Olympic Cauldron, they could return to the real world. However, Eggman and Bowser soon noticed Toad and the others eavesdropping nearby, prompting them to hurry out and get more medals. Eventually, Sonic and Mario faced Eggman and Bowser in another event in the National Gymnasium. There, Sonic beat Eggman in another event, which Toad congratulated him for. Soon after though, a screen that eventually said that "Power-up Items" from Eggman Nega were on the way, appeared. As mysterious items fell all over the digital world, Eggman and Bowser hurried out to get them and use them to win medals. Knowing they would be at a disadvantage against Eggman and Bowser if they got those power-ups, Sonic and Mario left Toad to stop the villains from getting the power-ups. Toad later met them again at the base Tokyo Tower. There, Toad pointed out that a "Miracle Roll" power-up was on the top of the tower. However, Toad stopped Mario from climbing it since Badniks guarded the tower. Regardless, Sonic and Mario teamed up and secured the Miracle Roll. However, Toad warned them that Eggman and his Badniks had fled to other Miracle Rolls.
Over time, Toad and the others discovered that the Tokyo '64 was running out of battery and that they would disappear if they were still inside the Tokyo '64 when the battery gave out. Regardless, Sonic and Mario were challenged to the decisive events by Eggman and Bowser. Knowing that the villains would try to play dirty however, Toad was given Sonic and Mario's gold medals for safekeeping while the heroic duo faced the villains. After losing the final event, Bowser tried to take medals from Mario and Sonic, only for Toad to reveal himself and show that they had outsmarted them. As Dr. Eggman tried to come up with a new plan, Sonic reminded them that they did not have much time left and that they should team up to get out. Eventually, Eggman and Bowser agree to help. The five characters thus went to the Olympic Cauldron and placed the gold medals into the keyholes. Soon after, a column of light appeared to take them back to the real world. While this was happening however, everything around them began to flicker, signifying that the battery had run out. The group subsequently began to fade away while unable to reach the escape route. Fortunately, they were saved in the last minute when Tails and Luigi replaced the battery on the Tokyo '64. Now restored, Toad and the others reached the exit and return to the real world. As Toad readjusted from his time inside the Toyko '64 though, Eggman and Bowser challenged Sonic and Mario to a decisive event (which the villains ultimately lost).
Super Smash Bros. series[]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Toad appears as a part of Princess Peach's moveset. In gameplay, she uses him as her standard Special Move. Interestingly, Toad (in Super Smash Bros. Brawl only) is able to release spores that damage the enemy after being used enough times as a shield.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Toad once again appears as a part of Princess Peach's moveset. In addition to serving as Peach's neutral special maneuver (in which he now actively guards her rather than be used like a human shield), Toad also attacks alongside Peach for her pummel and throw maneuvers.
