Agent Madonna Garnet, C.L.I.P. Division of G.U.N., commencing interrogation of subject. To begin, state your name for the record.

— Madonna Garnet, from Sonic Super Digest #12.

Madonna Garnet is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. She is a human agent of G.U.N.'s C.L.I.P. Division, charged with conducting interrogations.

Appearance[]

Madonna Garnet is a tall woman with peach skin, short, blonde hair and blue eyes of which one is hidden by her bangs. She wears a G.U.N. uniform consisting of a navy and red body suit. She towers over Julian Snively in height.

History[]

Shattered World Crisis[]

Act One[]

Following the hubbub on Angel Island, one of Madonna's assignments involved interviewing Dr. Julian Snively regarding his history with G.U.N. on the orders of Abraham Tower. After listening to his account regarding his previous history with Dr. Eggman, Walter Naugus, the Kingdom of Acorn, and Angel Island, she found herself in the unusual position of being unable to tell whether or not he was lying about anything.[1]

Personality[]

Madonna is a confident G.U.N. agent with a no-nonsense attitude. She remained focused and undistracted in her interrogation with suspected Dr. Snively, trying to catch him and his traitorous intentions in due process. She had no choice but to concede the interrogation after Snively kept his story straight and reported to her commander.

Trivia[]

  • Madonna's introduction into the comics was first hinted by head writer Ian Flynn on Twitter, though he noted it was "not in any way [we'd] expect."[2]
  • Madonna Garnet is based on a scrapped character created for the original Sonic the Hedgehog game from 1991. She was intended as a love interest for Sonic the Hedgehog by his designer Naoto Ohshima, but she was cut from the game by Sonic Team because they thought Sonic having to rescue her, similar to the Super Mario Bros series' main hero, was a silly direction for the character.[3]
  • Madonna's surname 'Garnet' is similar to that of Mary Garnet, a fictional character mentioned in the Sonic the Hedgehog Technical Files, which served as a origin story for the conceptualization of Sonic. The fact that her surname is that of a gemstone coupled with her status as a G.U.N. agent also makes her similar to Topaz from the Sonic X anime series and its comic series.
    • A garnet is typically known to be red in color. This may mean Madonna's surname is a callback to the color dress she wore in her early designs.

We created a woman named Madonna, and the original plan was to have Sonic rescue her. However, that kind of silly direction didn't really fit Sonic. We wanted to go with something more orthodox. Of course, there certainly are a lot of games like that in the world, where the hero has to rescue the princess. We wanted to do something different from Mario, though, and aim for a new direction."
