Chao hats are items of headwear that can be worn by Chao in the Chao Garden. These hats only appear in Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle.
Description[]
Chao hats vary in appearance and sizes, including beanies, fruit or vegetables and Chao Egg shells. Most Chao hats are available at the Black Market, though a few can be obtained through other methods.
Chao will only be able to wear hats once they have being given a specific Animal depending on the game; the Skeleton Dog in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, or the Koala in Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut. When given a hat by the player, the Chao will first hold it questioningly, then become excited and put on the hat. If a Chao has not been exposed to the proper animal yet, the Chao will only hold the hat questioningly, then toss it aside.
Hats cover the entire head of Chao, hiding any Animal Parts on its head. A Chao's eyes will appear as dark holes in the hat, making it resemble a helmet. To remove a hat from the Chao, the Chao must be attacked or thrown, though its hat may randomly fall off if it trips.
A Chao Garden can only hold a maximum of eight loose hats (those which are not on a Chao's head). Bringing a new hat to a garden full of hats will cause one of the existing hats (randomly chosen to be transported to a non-full garden and new hats cannot be obtained once each garden has eight loose hats. Hats may be sold at the Black Market to make space for new ones or obtain Rings.
Hats obtained from the Chao Garden[]
- Skull hat: A skull that can be dug up from the Dark Garden.
- Pumpkin hat: A carved pumpkin that can be dug up from the Neutral/Hero Garden.
- Chao Egg hat: One half of an eggshell, left behind by a newly-hatched Chao.
Hats available at the Black Market[]
- Apple hat: An apple with eye holes cut out.
- Watermelon hat: A watermelon with a happy face carved into it.
- Box hat: A cardboard box.
- Wool hat: A hat made of wool, available in three colors: black with gray stripes, blue with turquoise stripes and red with yellow stripes.
- Can hat: An empty fruit can.
- Pot hat: A reddish-brown flower pot.
- Bag hat: A brown paper grocery bag.
- Bucket hat: A gray, worn-out bucket.
Trivia[]
- Due to graphical issues, an object that was intended to function as a Chao hat (the pacifier) was left out of the games.
