Electrified ambusher.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Mic Drop[1][note 1] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, microphone-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance[]

The Mic Drops are based on hanging vintage microphones. Their inner bodies are red with a silver casing around their bodies, and they have two wide eyes with red pupils on top of their bodies. They also hang off a black string that is attached to a handle above their eyes.

Overview[]

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the Mic Drops appear in both Acts of Studiopolis Zone. In gameplay, they hang on ceilings either alone or in groups of up to four and will drop down when a playable character comes near, hanging from their cables. After about two seconds, they will begin swaying left and right, periodically generating an electric aura that inflicts damage if touched, effectively making the Mic Drops invulnerable.

A Spin Jump while they are not electrocuted can defeat this Badnik. A Lightning Shield will also protect the player from a Mic Drop's electric discharge, leaving it utterly defenseless. Upon their defeat, they release an Animal and award the player 100 points.

Powers and abilities[]

The Mic Drops have the ability to discharge electricity around their bodies in the form of an aura, allowing them to both protect themselves and electrocute those making physical contact with them.

A Mic Drop, from Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome #2.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, following his successful takeover of Egg Base Alpha and its Badniks, Dr. Starline used a Mic Drop to broadcast a message of his victory to Surge and Kit, whom he ordered to come to the command center.[2]

Trivia[]

  • This Badnik's name is a reference to a "mic drop", an intentional gesture of a person dropping one's microphone at the end of a performance or speech to signal triumph.
