Atomic Destroyer Zone

We finally arrived at the fortress. Break through the security system and destroy it with the ultimate weapon, the Atomic Destroyer!

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble[1]

Atomic Destroyer Zone (アトミックデストロイヤー・ゾーン[1] Atomikku Desutoroiyā Zõn?), also simply referred to as the Atomic Destroyer (アトミックデストロイヤー[1] Atomikku Desutoroiyā?) is the sixth and final Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble. As with other Zones in this game, Atomic Destroyer consists of two standard acts followed by a third act which contains the zone's boss (or, in this case, multiple bosses).

Description[]

The Atomic Destroyer Zone is an undersea fortress that serves as Dr. Robotnik's "ultimate weapon".[1] The base features a metallic structure, laser beams, and other elements of mad science.

Story[]

STTAtomicDestroyerKnuckles

Knuckles' electric cage

After a long journey, Sonic and Tails have found Dr. Robotnik's secret lair. Deep into the Zone, Sonic obtains Rocket Shoes, but is spotted and chased by Metal Sonic, who attacks Sonic in midair, leaving Sonic and Tails to fight him. After defeating Metal Sonic, they find Nack the Weasel, who cowardly flees after seeing Dr. Robotnik's machine, leaving Sonic and Tails to fight Robotnik alone.

After running out of mechas, Dr. Robotnik flees to a floating platform, but drops the final Chaos Emerald during his hasty retreat. Sonic and Tails proceed onwards to find an imprisoned Knuckles, captured after his defeat at Tidal Plant Zone. After destroying the energy cage, Sonic and Tails offer Knuckles a friendly handshake to make peace once again, which he accepts, and then all of them proceed to escape from Atomic Destroyer Zone.

Gameplay[]

Maze-like networks of high-speed warp tubes whisk the player around the Acts, and frequently deposit the playable character on top of a Switch that activates a security system, deploying Mecha Hiyokos to stop them. There's also a bunch of breakable walls and lasers shooting down at the playable characters, and Booster-like machines that can help the player pick up speed.

Overview[]

Act 1[]

Act 2[]

Act 3[]

Act 3 is slightly shorter than the previous Acts. After the finishing the boss fights, the player can damage Dr. Robotnik and claim the final Chaos Emerald, along with saving Knuckles by simply damaging his cage once.

Bosses[]

Metal Sonic[]

Atomic Destroyer Boss -1

Metal Sonic pursuing Sonic

Similarly to their well-known race in Stardust Speedway during Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Sonic and Metal Sonic clash once again inside the Doctor's titanic super-weapon. After a brief race on Rocket Shoes (or just flying, if the player is playing as Tails), Metal Sonic rams into Sonic, knocking Sonic's Rocket Shoes off. He follows up his attack by flying back and forth across the screen and periodically swooping along the floor with his electric shield. Sonic dodges the chromatic clone while he is charged up with electricity, and lands hits when the shield depletes and he slows down. Metal Sonic requires eight hits to disable.

Boss 1[]

Atomic Destroyer Boss -5

Sonic facing the Eggman in his mobile.

With Metal Sonic knocked out of the fight, Fang the Sniper briefly makes an appearance. Presumably in the Atomic Destroyer to steal the final Chaos Emerald, which is now in Dr. Robotnik's possession, Fang turns and flees after catching sight of Robotnik's armored pogo-attachment, leaving the player to face the Doctor one-on-one. This machine's defenses are mediocre, and it is destroyed after ten hits.

Boss 2[]

Flamethrower Mech

Sonic facing a flamethrower mech.

Robotnik, however, is not quite finished, and he proceeds to bring out a significantly more dangerous creation: a flying Eggmobile-like contraption that that spews jets of flame. Even after the player disables this weapon, Robotnik launches a series of electric and energy-ball attacks while the broken, sparking conduits of his flame-gun make attacking the vehicle hazardous. This section requires seventeen hits for a player victory.

Boss 3[]

STTAtomicDestroyerEggman

The final battle against Dr. Robotnik.

The final part of the boss sees Robotnik's pod shift up and down between the two ends of an electricity chamber. Energy bolts fire from cannons above the player, and the entire room is periodically filled with lightning. The only way for Sonic or Tails to dodge is to hide inside whichever chute Robotnik isn't occupying at the time. It takes eight hits for it to be destroyed.

Chaos Emerald locations[]

The Chaos Emerald monitors in Atomic Destroyer Zone can be found in the following locations

  • Act 1: Near the Act's end is a high ledge to the left of a pit. The Chaos Emerald monitor is on that ledge. Both characters can reach it, but Sonic has a harder time doing so. To reach it, ride the elevators that nearby down to the bottom of the Act. Afterward, the player has to jump to the ledge where the Chaos Emerald monitor is after leaving the second elevator.
  • Act 2: In the center of the High-speed warp tube labyrinth at the Act's beginning. After making it out of this labyrinth, the player must go to the bottom of the Act and take the pipes to the left to reach an elevator leading to the Chaos Emerald monitor.
