Jinlin and Wang's daughter. Hualin was born into a family of bun-makers, and as you might imagine, she is thoroughly bunned out. She has switched to an all-vegetable diet ("for my complexion!" she says) in hopes of reversing a lifetime of meat bun damage while still of marriageable age.

— Directory, Sonic Unleashed (Xbox 360/PlayStation 3)

Hualin (ワーリン Wārin?) is a character that appears in Sonic Unleashed. She is a human resident of Chun-nan and the daughter of Jinlin and Wang. As a part of her family's tradition, Hualin is meant to inherit the family's meat bun restaurant once her mother retires.

History[]

Xbox 360/PlayStation 3[]

Hualin was born as the daughter to Jinlin and Wang into a family of meat bun makers. According to family tradition, Hualin was meant to take over the family's meat bun shop, and was thus trained by her mother and her grandmother to become a meat bun chef. As a part of her training, Hualin would work with her mother in the kitchen. However, Hualin got tired of meat buns and came to dislike the boring lifestyle of a meat bun maker, eventually switching to an all-vegetable diet to keep her figure while she could still get married.

Despite her opinions, Hualin's family insisted she followed tradition, especially her grandmother, whom Hualin kept butting heads with. At the same time, she longed to experience the world. As she got older, Hualin got only more rebellious, making it more difficult for Jinlin and Lin to teach her, especially their family's secret meat bun recipe.

During the events of Sonic Unleashed, Hualin noticed that her village was in an uproar, though she did not understand why. It turned out that the village elder Zonshen had gone missing when he went to look for the village's treasure, but Hualin only understood that everyone was panicking about the elder not coming back or something. During this frenzy, Hualin met Sonic the Hedgehog and Chip when they first arrived in Chun-nan and told them what she had heard about the village's crisis. When Sonic and Chip later returned from outside the village, having saved Zonshen from the Dark Gaia Phoenix, Hualin told the duo how amazed she was at them. As Sonic and Chip then said they still had to fix the planet after its was shattered by Dark Gaia, Hualin thought it was a big thing for them to do and wondered if it was a dangerous task.

Not long after, Hualin and her village were invaded by Badniks who were lurking outside the village and kept Hualin confined to her village. When Sonic and Chip returned to Chun-nan shortly after to deal with the robot threat, Hualin told the duo about how it sucked to be stuck in the village. Later, after Sonic and Chip returned from dealing with the robots, Hualin was surprised to heard from them how they managed to drive them off. Hualin then told Sonic and Chip that they were unbelievable and asked them how they managed to do that. Later, when Sonic and Chip were about to go back to Spagonia, Hualin told them how she wanted to see this city someday.

With the crisis over and the village returning to normal, Hualin was glad that everything was calming down, but also admitted to Sonic and Chip when they came by that she now found her village too boring, since the robot invasion was probably the only exciting thing that had happen in her village. This passed-by thrill also made Hualin long even more to see the world, and she told Sonic and Chip that she had had to get out of her village soon. She later told Sonic and Chip about how her mother and grandmother were nagging her to make meat buns and how she thought it would suck.

In the following period, Hualin became more passionate about her refusal to learn how to make meat buns and to learn the family recipe. Soon after, things came to a boil for Hualin when her grandmother wanted her to help her Jinlin make meat buns, where Hualin yelled that she hated meat buns and her village, and that she had decided to leave the village. While her family had their doubts, Hualin stood by her words and left her village, intending to see the world.

After leaving her village, Hualin decided to travel the world to see all the different places and make new experiences, where she first traveled to Spagonia to finally see the city that she wanted to visit for so long. While in the city, Hualin ran into Sonic and Chip, and she told them proudly that she left her village and stated firmly that she was never coming back. She also told them that her mother and grandmother could keep their meat bun shop and stuff it.

After spending her time in Spagonia, Hualin traveled on to Mazuri, where she met Sonic and Chip again. As they talked together, she told them that she found the weather so hot and humid that she thought she would die and that she did not know places with such bad weather. She then remarked that she felt hungry and thought that she should take a load off and get something to eat.

Hualin eventually left Mazuri and traveled to Shamar. While there, she met up with Sonic and Chip again and asked them why it was hot here as well before apologizing to Sonic and Chip for asking them this, as they did not control the weather. Hualin then started to feel hungry and she decided to take a load off while getting something to eat.

After Shamar, Hualin moved on to Empire City where she met Charles. During a conversation with him, Hualin mentioned that Zonshen was the world's best doctor. Charles, however, could not believe that the world's best doctor would live in the boonies and asked her if she lied. Hualin, however, insisted she was telling the truth and told Charles that it was really rude of him to refer to her home in such a manner, though she agreed with him just a little. After mentioning a little more about Zonshen, Hualin tried to change the subject and asked Charles about the local cuisine as she was hungry.

After visiting Empire City, Hualin traveled to Apotos. There, she met up with Sonic and Chip again and told them how gorgeous the place was. She also expressed her pride in herself for traveling all this way on her own, before remarked that all this excitement had made her hungry and decided to take a load off while getting a bite to eat.

At the end of her travels, Hualin had satisfied her desire to see the world and had as well gained a new respect for her village and its customs after seeing so many different cultures. As such, Hualin felt ready to become a meat bun maker and returned to Chun-nan, where her family was happy to have her back and to hear that she was now set on taking over the meat bun shop. Shortly after, Hualin met up with Sonic and Chip again and told them about what she had learned on her travels and what she had decided to do.

Despite being willing to make meat buns, Hualin still had arguments with her grandmother, as Hualin proved to be somewhat of a klutz in the kitchen. When Sonic and Chip later made a visit, Hualin asked them hypothetically if her grandmother knew about filial respect and such, and then remarked glad that she would probably never understand the people in her village.

Later on, during Sonic and Chip's battle with Dark Gaia, Hualin witnessed the local Gaia Temple rise from the ground. Hualin later watched on in horror with the rest of her village, while she protected Yilin, as Dark Gaia began to cast the world into darkness while maturing into Perfect Dark Gaia, but later rejoiced with Yilin when the world returned to normal following Perfect Dark Gaia's defeat at the hands of Super Sonic and the Gaia Colossus.

During the events of Sonic Unleashed, Hualin met Sonic the Hedgehog and Chip when the traveling duo first arrived in Chun-nan. Hearing that they traveled the world, Hualin remarked that it had to be hard for them travelling so far. She then decided to give them Soundtrack 41 to make their trip worthwhile and remarked it would be nice if they bumped into someone they knew.

After Sonic the Werehog and Chip saved Zonshen from the Dark Gaia Phoenix, Hualin was given a Sun Tablet by Zonshen, and was told to give it to Sonic and Chip once she saw them. When Hualin later found Sonic and Chip, she told them they were awesome for not only saving the elder, but also for trying to fix the planet. Hualin then remembered the Sun Tablet and gave it to Sonic and Chip. While Hualin knew the Sun Tablet was very valuable, she was sure they could trust Sonic and Chip with it.

When Sonic and Chip returned to Hualin after receiving the Sun Tablet, she told them it was so stimulating being around them and that she hoped they would come by again. Later on, when Sonic and Chip met up with Hualin again, she said that Sonic had a real fire in his eyes that looked cool, before she asked if they did not change color.

Later on, during Sonic and Chip's battle with Dark Gaia, Hualin witnessed the local Gaia Temple rise from the ground. Hualin later watched on in horror with the rest of her village while she protected Yilin, as Dark Gaia began to cast the world into darkness while maturing into Perfect Dark Gaia, but later rejoiced with Yilin when the world returned to normal following Perfect Dark Gaia's defeat at the hands of Super Sonic and the Gaia Colossus.

Personality[]

A typical teenager, Hualin is rebellious and longs for freedom. Born into a family of meat bun makers, Hualin was "bunned out" at an early age due to being constantly surrounded by meat buns all her life. She also came to dislike the lifestyle as a meat bun maker, finding it a boring and unfulfilling lifestyle in her small village. As a result, she would display a great distaste for meat buns, even switching to an all-vegetable diet just to defy them and was reluctant to take over the family business. Instead, she longed for adventure and wanted to go out and see the world rather than be stuck in her home.

During her travels, Hualin satisfied her lifelong thirst to see the world. After having seen so many places and people, she realized how amazing her own village was and thought it was great that it held onto the past and still moved toward the future, making her finally feel ready to continue her family's meat bun tradition.

Trivia[]
