Sister Sonic (シスターソニック Shisutāsonikku?) is the original version of the Popful Mail remake for the Sega CD first announced in the magazine Beep, Beep! MegaDrive's November 1992 issue.

Description[]

Popful Mail was a NEC PC-8801 RPG video game released by Nihon Falcom in 1991. Nihon Falcom had paired up with Sega in 1992 to form "Sega Falcom". Many of their previously released games would be reimagined for the Sega CD. Sister Sonic was the remake of Popful Mail, replacing the existing cast of the game with Sonic characters. This includes the main character, Sister Sonic, a female relative of Sonic who was described as a bounty hunter that was "more sexy and flirtatious than Sonic's more cutesy appearance". The director for Sega Falcom explained that this new coalition of companies was focused on reimaginating their hit titles, and giving them more international appeal. Due to a large number of angry letters sent to Sega Falcom, it was decided to cancel this Sonic-theme reimaginating and instead settle on a more faithful remake of Popful Mail to the Sega CD. This would have been the first RPG in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Because of this game's cancellation, the Sonic franchise would not feature a RPG until 2008 when Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood was developed by Sega and Bioware. According to Electronic Gaming Monthly, this scenario was a great example of the consumer's power to influence a video game company's decisions.[citation needed]
