Flee the fiery furnace!

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia[1]

Volcanic Vault is the first stage in SegaSonic the Hedgehog. Sonic, Mighty, and Ray are dropped here after being blasted from the prison tower.

Description[]

The stage is set in a volcano. The traps include fireballs, lava, and a collapsing bridge.

Overview[]

In the beginning of Volcanic Vault, the player gets trapped by Eggman and placed in a trap where spikes slowly advance. To escape the player must attack the bars to destroy them. The player then gets catapulted to a platform that Eggman destroys, sending the player to a strip of land where they must outrun rolling magma ball. After the escape, the player lands on a large seesaw, as the playable character is then sent to flying by the magma ball dropping to the other side of the seesaw. The angle changes and the player must run to open doors while dodging lava that spurts from the ground at regular intervals. The player then walks along a bridge that collapses, the player must then climb up the bridge back onto land. The angle changes and the player must outrun more lava. After outrunning the lava, the stage ends.

Trivia[]

  • Volcanic Vault is the first non-tropical island-themed level at the beginning of a Sonic game.
  • The background music for this stage was remixed in Sonic Mania Plus, where it can be heard while choosing a partner in Angel Island Zone.
  • During the final stretch there are sparkling golden spots along the wall. Using a Spin Jump on them will reveal hidden Rings.
