GUN Fortress (GUNフォートレス Gan Fōtoresu?) is one of the sixth stages in Shadow the Hedgehog, being the final stage of the "True Dark" route. It is G.U.N.'s top-secret base and can be reached by completing the Dark mission of either The ARK or Air Fleet.
Description[]
GUN Fortress is a giant complex that serves as G.U.N.'s headquarters.[1] With proximity to the sea, the fortress is a highly secured stronghold, guarded by an immeasurable number of G.U.N. infantry and machines, with even top-clearance operatives like Rouge not being let inside.[2] Amongst the security features in GUN Fortress are deadly lasers, surveillance camera, pits of a lethal, light blue substance, and machines that summon G.U.N. armed mechs like Giga Troopers. The complex houses the three mother computers that coordinate the forces resisting the Black Arms' invasion.
Story[]
After Shadow helps the Black Arms obliterate Central City with the Eclipse Cannon and/or almost manage to assasinate the President of the United Federation, the Commander arrives at GUN Fortress with the miraculously unscathed President, telling him that the people of Central City had been evacuated to a "safe zone" the previous day. Soon, however, the GUN Captain announces that the Black Arms have made a full-scale attack on the fortress, with an estimate of over 1,000 aliens having already penetrated GUN's outer perimeter, and that Shadow has been sighted along with the extraterrestrial terrorists. As such, the Commander orders to mobilize all mechs, prepare all weapons, and mobilize "Diablon", which has still not been finished; as a last-ditch effort to erradicate the Black Arms and protect the President and the Chaos Emeralds.
Elsewhere, Shadow has already broken into GUN Fortress. Now knowing what he has to do as the Ultimate Life Form born to ensure peace and justice amongst all of humanity, he sets off to get the last two Chaos Emerald and find out who he truly is. Along the way, he finds Doom's Eye, who has him destroy all three mother computers in the stronghold to erradicate the last few defenses remaining and allow the Black Arms to fulfill their "prosperity ritual" which involves destroying earth with the Eclipse Cannon. Not too long after, the hedgehog comes across Rouge, who wants him to protect the Chaos Emerald inside the base from the aliens.
- Dark: Shadow aids the Black Arms and destroys the three mother computers as tasked. Upon completing his mission and finding the sixth Chaos Emerald, he is confronted by Sonic and the Commander, who is piloting the unfinished Diablon. After defeating his foes, the black hedgehog gets the final Emerald. When interrogated by a beaten Sonic, Shadow announces that he, having been created to bring order to the humans, will use the gems to destroy earth.
- Hero: Shadow decides to betray the Black Arms at the last moment and secures the sixth Chaos Emerald with Rouge. Soon after, Black Doom appears before him, enraged at his disobedience, and fights him in an epic showdown. Eventually, the hedgehog defeats the alien overlord and gets the final Emerald, announcing that he will use the jewels to conquer the universe, being the Ultimate Life Form born to rule all that he is.

Secret Key locations[]
- From the start of Stage, the Key is located on the left, just behind the large container.
- After using the pulley in the first large room, the Key is located to the right, between two large containers.
- In the second large room after getting the Jump Vehicle, go up to the second level past the pulley to find the Key sitting on the ground next to the barriers.
- Behind the second core, just after the fourth Save Point. This one is easy to miss, especially if going for speed.
- After using the pulley after the secret door, there is a hallway that Shadow can Triangle Jump to get past. The Key is at the end of this stretch.
The Secret Door can be found along the main route of the stage, just behind a Big Foot. Inside, there is a G.U.N. vehicle and a shortcut through the Stage with many Rings and 1-Ups. This shortcut also bypasses a difficult area before rejoining the main path that leads to the final mother computer and the Goal Ring.

There are GUN turrets in all three mother computer rooms that are to be used to destroy the cores. If there are no enemies nearby, Shadow will automatically target the cores himself. By destroying all of the GUN Soldiers and mechs, the player will receive about 40,000 points in total, which is more than enough for an A-Rank. This makes it one of the few Dark missions where a time bonus isn't need to get an A-Rank.

Trivia[]
- The game's files refer to this Stage as "bas02", short for BASE while the 02 signifies it is the second G.U.N. base-themed Stage, with Air Fleet being the first, signified by its filename of "bas01".
- According to Rouge, the electrified pools of blue liquid seen throughout the fortress is toxic waste. Doom's Eye also comments on it, saying that the contaminated stream will probably eat away at Shadow's "flesh and bones".
- Oddly, destroying the GUN security doors adds to the player's normal score. Since collecting Rings is the only other thing that does this, it is probably an oversight by the developers.
