Stationary enemy with weighted cudgels.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Ribot[1] (ケロッポ[2] Keroppo?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, frog-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance[]

Based on frogs, the Ribots are small Badniks with green and silver armor. They have a small pair of eyes and footrests. Most noticeably, they carry round weights attached to their heads by chains. They either carry a single one on top of their heads or two on both sides of their heads.

Overview[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the Ribots are only encountered in Launch Base Zone. Here, they remain in stationary positions either on the ground or on red support structures where they repeat their attack patterns constantly.

The Ribots have can one of three attacks patterns which is determined by the number of weights they carry. When carrying two weights, the Ribot will either pound the ground from above or sweep the ground with both weights. When carrying only one weight, the Ribot will swing their weight through the air in a circular arc. Touching the Ribots' weight will inflict damage, so the player must look out for their attack patterns in order to not get hit. The Ribots themselves can be easily destroyed with a Spin Jump or Spin Jump, awarding the player 100 points and releasing their Animal in the process.

In the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions, the Ribot is a part of Dr. Ivo Robotnik's Badnik army and is among the third generation of Badniks the doctor produced. A Ribot was among several Badniks about to be melted down by Robotnik as punishment for failing him.

Trivia[]

  • The British The Official Sega Mega Drive Sonic 3 Play Guide book lists Ribot 1 and Ribot 2 as two separate type of enemies based on their different attack pattern despite being the same Badnik. Erroneously, Ribot 1 is also implied to be able to jump, something that does not occur in the game.[3][4]
  • "Ribot" is a pun on the words ribbit and robot.
  • The Ribots' Japanese name is based on the word "Kero-kero" which is an onomatopoeia for a ribbit. Roppo also means "six directions," which are north, south, east, west, up, and down, referencing its swinging variant's directional punches, and its spinning variant's multiple directions.
