Final Fortress

The Final Fortress (ファイナルフォートレス Fainaru Fōtoresu?), also known as Final Fortress Zone, is the fourteenth and final stage in Sonic Heroes. It is a gigantic battleship that serves as the heart of the Egg Fleet and the setting of the climax of the game's story.

Description[]

The Final Fortress is set onboard a predominantly gray and red, whale-shaped warship that serves as the heart of the Egg Fleet, being an easily gargantuan craft in size. The whole stage takes place outside of the ship, with various floating platforms over the skies that are heavily guarded by tough Badniks and cannons, and are connected by yellow, glowing Grind Rails. The area the Final Fortress flies over during the level is surrounded by rough, stormy weather. At the very core of the flagship lies a giant structure that looks like Eggman's head, hiding the power core of the vessel.

Story[]

Team Sonic must take down the battleship by destroying its power core. Team Dark must reach this power core and capture the Doctor. Team Rose goes to find Froggy and Chocola, whom they believe have been kidnapped by Dr. Eggman. Team Chaotix goes to find the keys to free their client and meet him in person. After reaching the core, Neo Metal Sonic, disguised as Eggman, attempts to finish off the heroes in the Egg Emperor.

Gameplay[]

Final Fortress has many different sections crossed with grinding Rails, Tornado Jump poles, cannon fire, and the best of Dr. Eggman's robotic army. Some parts of the stage collapse; others can be detonated. Laser fire occurs periodically throughout the stage as well. The most common enemy there is the E-2000.

Trivia[]

  • In Super Hard Mode, after Team Sonic triggers the first self-destruct button on the Rail section, Sonic comments about the dark clouds in the background while Knuckles asks Tails if he can handle the stormy weather. The fox falsely replies that he is not scared, alluding to the fact that Tails has a fear of lightning.
  • The lasers fired by the Final Fortress match the team formations' primary colors: Blue for Speed Type, yellow for Fly Type, and red for Power Type. On the PC version, these indirect effects that are normally used were disabled.
  • In English version, Tails will ask why the ship self-destructed after pressing the button, while in the Japanese version, Tails asked why Eggman would place a self-destruct switch where it was easily accessible.
  • Though surrounded by a massive thunderstorm in this stage, the Final Fortress can be seen in clear weather during the Egg Fleet opening cutscene.
