But this plan of yours is foolish! It will bring nothing but grief to our land and cause needless pain and suffering to our neighbors! There must be another way. We should not try to help our own kind by bringing harm to someone else. It's wrong.

— Tikal, A Chaotic Day

Tikal (ティカル Tikaru?) is a character that appears in the anime series Sonic X and its comic series published by Archie Comics. She was an anthropomorphic echidna sprit and the daughter of Chief Pachacamac of the Knuckles Clan.

In her youth, Tikal befriended a colony of Chao and their guardian Chaos. When Chaos went on a destructive rampage after her father attempted to steal Chaos' Chaos Emeralds, Tikal stopped Chaos by sealing it inside the Master Emerald with her own spirit. In the present era, Tikal was released when Dr. Eggman planned to use Chaos to take over Earth, where she aided Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies. After Chaos was calmed, Tikal left with it to live in peace. However, she would still keep an eye on the Earth until Sonic and his friends returned to their home Zone.

Appearance[]

Tikal was once a peach-orange-furred anthropomorphic echidna girl with a peach muzzle, a small black nose, cobalt-blue eyes with two medium-length eyelashes on each one, dreadlock-like spines around the sides and back of her head and a medium-sized, tri-crooked tail. During those years, she wore a tank top-like garment which revealed her midriff and the traditional tribal skirt with beige, green, and red triangular patterns. As a sign of her lineage, she wore a golden armlet on her right arm, a golden necklace and a tiara-like band atop her forehead, both of which were decorated with triangles and a light blue jewel in the center. Her white gloves were adorned with thick, cobalt-blue bracelets around her wrists, and she wore white-strapped sandals. Her dreadlocks and left arm were also wrapped with similar white bandages.

In her spiritual form, she appeared either as a bright pink orb of light which hovered in the air, or as a full-bodied apparition resembling her once-physical self.

History[]

Anime[]

Past[]

Tikal was born generations ago as the daughter of Pachacamac, the chief of the Knuckles Clan.[1] Unlike her greedy and warmongering father, Tikal was a kind and gentle pacifist that opposed her father's horrible ways.[2] At some point, she befriended the Chao colony at the Altar of Emerald, along with the Chao's guardian, Chaos.[3]

Eventually, Pachacamac began plotting to steal the seven Chaos Emeralds at the altar to help his invasion efforts. Appalled by this, Tikal tried convincing her father to not go through with it, but failed.[2] Tikal later returned to the altar to warn Chaos and beseeched it to take the Chao to safety, but was told that it could not leave the altar. Despite her worries, Tikal assured the worried Chao that things would be fine. In gratitude, the Chao brought Tikal before the Master Emerald. Believing it had guided her there, Tikal pleaded to the Master Emerald for help. As if the Master Emerald spoke to her, Tikal began citing a mantra, which she realized explained the relationship between the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald.[3]

When Pachacamac and his followers finally attacked the Altar, Tikal and the local Chao chose to stand in their way. Tikal pleaded her father to change his mind, but her efforts were in vain. Instead, Pachacamac had his trample over Tikal and the Chao on their way to the altar, causing Tikal to lose consciousness.[4] When Tikal came to consciousness, she saw the horrible destruction that had befallen the area; when Pachacamac and his men attacked, they angered Chaos, who used the Chaos Emeralds to become Perfect Chaos and start a rampage where it had killed Pachacamac, his men and nearly the entire Knuckles Clan.[4][5][6] Realizing that Chaos was now blind with rage and would not stop its rampage until it had destroyed the world, Tikal turned to the Master Emerald and recited her mantra. Using her spirit as a catalyst, Tikal sacrificed her body to strip Chaos of its power and seal it away within Master Emerald with her own spirit.[4][6]

Chaos Emerald Saga[]

When Knuckles left Oriental City after obtaining the red Chaos Emerald, Tikal showed him a brief vision of the Altar of Emerald in its prime while reciting a piece of her prayer.[7]

Chaos Saga[]

Six months after the Master Emerald was brought to Earth, Tikal's spirit was released from the Master Emerald, along with Chaos, when Dr. Eggman shattered the massive gem in order to free Chaos and harness its power in order to take over the world.[2] Afterward, Tikal would bestow visions of the past to Knuckles and Sonic to inform them of the cataclysm Chaos was threatening to unleash upon them.[2][3][5][6]

Tikal eventually took direct action when Sonic, Tails and Chris confronted Perfect Chaos, who was wrecking havoc in Station Square, in the X Tornado. Bringing the X Tornado down gently, Tikal appeared before Sonic in physical form and told him of how she kept Chaos in check until Eggman awoke it. As Perfect Chaos then released the Chaos Emeralds, having drained them of their negative energy, Tikal believed the only option was to seal Chaos again. However, Sonic noted to her that history would just repeat itself that way. Fortunately, Sonic's friends gathered the Chaos Emeralds for Sonic, who then used their positive energy to turn into Super Sonic, much to the amazement of Tikal, who had believed until then that the Emeralds only got their power from anger and rage. After Super Sonic defeated Chaos and neutralized its anger, Chaos noticed that the Chao it had protected was well and decided to leave with Tikal. With everything right again, Tikal disappeared along with Chaos.[4]

After Tikal and her group of Chao came through the Master Emerald to Earth to help stop Perfect Chaos from destroying Station Square, Tikal invited Cream's Chao, Cheese, to come with them with her Chao. Cheese decided to stay with Cream as they went back home through the Master Emerald.[8]

Later, the Master Emerald sensed danger when Dr. Eggman's army of evil Chao created havoc in Station Square. As Knuckles was guarding the Master Emerald, Tikal, Chaos and her Chao appeared. Telling them of their purpose here, Tikal invited Knuckles to join her army to save the earth.[9]

As Sonic, Tails and Amy were overpowered by the evil Chao in Station Square; Knuckles, Tikal, Chaos and her group of Chao joined the fight. There, Tikal informed Chaos they could not reason with the evil Chao when it tried as it as their nature. Suddenly, Eggman appeared in his Egg-Gantor, to force them to surrender, but Tikal was prepared and sent a telepathic message to her army of Chao to gather the seven Chaos Emeralds and to give them to Chaos. Chaos became powerful enough to take on Eggman's robot while Tikal fought against the evil Chao, until Chuck Thorndyke managed to stop Eggman's signal and transformed the evil Chao back to normal. Chaos transformed back to normal after defeating Eggman and Tikal offered to take all of the Chao back with them, including Cheese. However, Cheese preferred to stay with his friends and was given a chance to visit them and all he had to do was call Tikal's name before Tikal and her friends departed.[9]

Personality[]

Tikal was a gentle, fair-minded and kindhearted pacifist with a peaceful temperament. She was very devout to her beliefs, rarely resorting to unnecessary roughness, and would try to resolve conflicts by trying to sway people away from their destructive paths peacefully.[2][4] She severely opposed greed, violence, brutality and fighting, and wished for everything to be in peace, harmony and tranquility. As a result, she opposed the ways of her warmongering father.[2] While she abhored fighting though, Tikal was also a strong defender of peace and was not above helping others fight to protect the world and its people.[4] She would as well fight herself when necessary, but only for the right reasons.[9]

Tikal was very caring, empathetic and compassionate about the people around her, being willing to put her own well-being on the line to keep needless harm from befalling the innocent.[4] She was similarly very non-discriminatory, never treating anyone with prejudice, and was good at making friends with peaceful creatures.[3]

Powers and abilities[]

Having been taught how to fight by her tribe's elders, Tikal knew how to defend herself and had as least passible skills in hand-to-hand combat.[10]

Tikal was one of the few known people who were able to access and utilize the powers of the Master Emerald on her own by using her mantra, allowing her to harness its various abilities.[4] She was also the only known person to be able to understand Chaos' language.[3]

Following her transcension into a spirit, Tikal gained a variety of mysterious spiritual powers. These powers included assuming the discorporate form of a floating and glowing orb, which could move very fast, and even spiritually assume her physical form if needed.[4][6] She could also levitate and teleport herself and others, and demonstrated telekinentic abilities, like when she enveloped the X Tornado in a spiritual light and brought it down to the ground.[4]

A prominent spiritual power of Tikal's was the ability to temporarily transport people's minds back in time through the Chaos Emeralds or the Master Emerald's shards, or by enveloping the recipient in a blinding light.[2][4][7] During these "visions", people could physically interact with their surroundings in the past.[4][5] Once these "visions" ended, the recipient was returned to their body.

Trivia[]

  • Although not of royalty, Tikal was commonly referred to as "Princess Tikal", likely because she was the daughter of a chief (Pachacamac), which is analogous to a king.
  • Tikal first appears in the Japanese dub of "Pure Chaos", narrating the first part of the show. However, the English dub cuts her out, and instead, she first appears in "A Chaotic Day".

Notes[]

  1. The world where Tikal comes from is not named in the anime and comics. The comics state, though, that Tikal and her friends traveled across dimensions on a parallel planet, Earth.
