Invincible flying dispenser of spiked balls and Rings

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia[1]

The Sprinkler[2][3] (スプリンクラー[4] Supurinkurā?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman. Containing endless amount of items, the Sprinklers specialize in dropping different objects for either unfortunate or rewarding marks.

Appearance[]

The classic Sprinklers resemble orange pots with a cyan eye. They also have three cyan spikes as feet, while the lower half of their bodies are completely gray. Separating the Sprinklers' lower and upper halves is a black line. They also have a hole on their heads, from where they can release different objects.

In Sonic Generations, the Sprinklers were redesigned. While retaining their orange pot design and the black line separating their upper and lower halves, their lower halves were colored black while their feet became gray. They also received two cyan eyes which were placed underneath their armor so that they were only visible inside the black line separating their upper and lower halves. They also received gray bars on the middle of their pots. Later, in Sonic Lost World, the Sprinklers were given a complete redesign. In this game, they basically looked like three-footed flower pots with a large cyan eye on the front, a light green upper half and dark green lower half, and an orange flower with yellow spots protruding from the hole on their heads.

In Sonic Forces, the Sprinklers regained much of their design from Sonic Colors, with the exception of their lower halves, which were a colored yellowish tan, and their eyes, which were covered by orange lids.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Colors[]

The Sprinklers first appear as enemies in the Wii version of Sonic Colors, and later in the remaster Sonic Colors: Ultimate. In these games, the player encounters them in Tropical Resort Act 4 and Planet Wisp Act 2.

In gameplay, the Sprinklers cannot be defeated, even if the player uses a Color Power on them. However, they will get stunned for couple of seconds when taking a hit. Aside from that, the Sprinklers always appear in the 2.5D sections of the Acts where they will either follow the player around from above or hover in a stationary position. Each of them will also either drop iron balls or Rings at Sonic (the former will disappear a few seconds after being dropped).

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, Sprinklers from somewhere across spacetime appear as enemies in the Underwater Ring Machine, Hot Pursuit and Rescue the Animals 2! Challenge Acts. In this game, they received a slight redesign.

In gameplay, the Sprinklers, like before, cannot be destroyed by the player in any way; simply attacking them will only stun them for a moment. In terms of attack patterns, the Sprinklers' behavior is determined by their Challenge Act: in Underwater Ring Machine, the Sprinkler will try flying away from the player while dropping only Rings, and in the remaining Challenge Acts, they will follow Sonic around while trying to drop bombs on him in order to slow him down.

Sonic Lost World[]

In the Wii U version and PC version of Sonic Lost World, the Sprinklers appear as enemies again. In these games, the Sprinklers and Dr. Eggman's other Badniks got hijacked by the Deadly Six.

Sprinklers are found in Frozen Factory Zone 4 and Sky Road Zone ? and serve the same role as in Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. Like before, they cannot be destroyed, and attacking them will only stun them momentarily. Their attack patterns also depend on the Zone they are in: the Sprinkler in Frozen Factory Zone 4 will fly around dropping Rings for the player to collect, and the Sprinklers in Sky Road Zone ? will follow the player around while attempting to drop miniature iron balls on Sonic.

Sonic Forces[]

In Sonic Forces, the Sprinklers return as enemies. In this game, they were redesigned so they looked more like their Sonic Colors incarnation. They are only encountered in the Flying Pod extra stage.

In gameplay, the Sprinklers can again not be destroyed by any means. This time around however, attacking a Sprinkler will both stun it momentarily and make it spit out a Ring. Like in Sonic Colors, the Sprinklers will either follow the player around from midair or hover in a stationary position. Most of them also spit out iron balls to drop on Sonic, while the rest spit out Rings.

Powers and abilities[]

A Sprinkler has endless amounts of different objects inside of itself. Depending on the situation, they can drop iron balls, bombs and even Rings. Each Sprinkler is also capable of levitation and is invulnerable to harm.
