Sydney Bland[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions. He is an anthropomorphic newt from the Emerald Hill Zone, described by other characters as a "saddo".
History[]
Past[]
Sydney had been unhappy his entire life. At some point, Sydney inherited a large amount of money, but discovered that it did not make him happy, so he decided to use his money to make everyone else miserable as well. He purchased a flying saucer shaped like a newt's head, equipped with lasers and mechanical arms, and which was able to accelerate to near-light speed in 0.2 seconds. He declared himself the new world leader, replacing Dr. Robotnik.[1]
The Sky's the Limit[]
In his first appearance over the Emerald Hill Zone, the locals did not take him seriously until he started blasting their homes with his lasers. Tails chased after him, but wasn't able to follow when Sydney piloted the flying saucer into space. Nevertheless, Tails was able to lay a trap for him by arranging for a delivery of Golden Rings to be delivered from the Eldorado Zone to the Emerald Hill Zone. Sydney stole them, but their weight prevented his flying saucer from escaping and he crashed. Sydney was captured by Tails and put in prison.[1]
Personality[]
Sydney is a very gloomy individual, having been miserable his entire life. Sydney is also very petty and spiteful, deciding that if he cannot be happy, then everyone else should be miserable as well. He is very greedy and power-hungry, desiring to rule the world, and claiming that he has practiced being greedy, selfish, and deadly.[1]
Trivia[]
- In Sonic the Comic #138, "Doctor Genius", two civilians discuss Bland's defeat by Tails. In this story, his first name is spelled "Sidney".
