The Collection Room[1] (コレクションルーム[2] Korekushon Rūmu?), also known as the Professor's Room[1] or simply Collection[3] (コレクション Korekushon?), is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It refers to an area for hosting collectibles in the games.

Description[]

The Collection Room is a form of area, usually a room, of varying design that can be found in various locations. They are used for hosting and displaying collectibles obtained by the cast.

In gameplay, the Collection Room can be found in the different game's hub worlds, such as Town Stages. Its purpose in the games is to contain and showcase the collectibles obtained by the player. These collectibles vary from concept artwork, to soundtracks, to character profiles. Whenever the player obtains or unlocks a collectible, it will automatically be transferred to the Collection Room.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Unleashed[]

In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, this location is referred to as both the Collection Room[1] (コレクションルーム[2] Korekushon Rūmu?) and Professor's Room.[1] In this game, there are two Collection Rooms, namely in Spagonia and Shamar, both of which serve as Professor Pickle's study rooms. As such, these rooms look like neatly arranged offices with bookcases covering the walls, desks, European-inspired furniture, and other accessories befitting a university professor, like a miniature world globe. It should be noted though that the Collection Room in Shamar is a bit more messy than its counterpart in Spagonia and includes furniture like an electric fan. Also, despite the game having two Collection Rooms, the collectibles displayed in them are shared between them, meaning neither of these rooms differ in content.

In gameplay, the Collection Rooms can be found inside the Town Stages of Spagonia and Shamar. Inside these rooms, the player can talk to Professor Pickle to receive instructions on where to go next, as well as gameplay hints. When speaking to Professor Pickle, the player can also give him a Souvenir in exchange for an additional gameplay hint (one hint per unique item). Also, in order to view the collected content in the game from the Collection Room, the player must buy the following furniture from the Shops, which will allow the player to view the following content:

  • Television: View unlocked movie scenes. Each movie scene can be unlocked by collecting its respective Videotape.
  • Gramophone/Audio System: Listen to in-game music. Each music track can be unlocked by collecting its respective Record.
  • Bookshelf: See information on the following subjects:
    • Data Archives: View concept artwork from the game. Each artwork can be unlocked by collecting its respective Art Book.
    • Directory: Contains biographies and pictures of the people in the Town Stages. Each character profile can be unlocked by talking to the person for the first time.
    • Bestiary: Contains information and pictures on the enemies and bosses in the game. It is split between "Dark Gaia's Minions" and "Eggman's Machinery". Each profile can be unlocked by defeating the subject for the first time.

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version and Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, the Collection Room makes a return appearance. In the console/PC version, it is referred to as the Collection Room[4] while in the Nintendo 3DS version, it is just called Collection[3] (コレクション Korekushon?).

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, the Collection Room is a room with red walls and floors and a white door leading into it. The room itself contains completely white furniture, including a television set, chairs, paintings, a gramophone, a chandelier, a turntable and a cupboard, as well as red books and sofa cushions. In gameplay, the Collection Room resides in White Space and can be accessed on the far left of said space. By approaching and interacting with the different pieces of furniture in the room, the player can view the following collectibles:

  • Movies: Recap movie scenes from the game. Each movie scene can be unlocked after viewing it during the main playthrough.
  • Art: View concept designs, sketches and other artworks from both Sonic Generations and the games preceding it which were used for visual references at the earliest stages of the game's development. Each artwork can be unlocked by collecting Red Star Rings and musical notes.
  • Music: Listen to in-game music and bonus tracks. Each music track can be unlocked by collecting Red Star Rings and musical notes.
  • Characters: View the biographies and models of the characters in the game. Each character profile can be unlocked after either rescuing one of Sonic's friends or beating a rival/boss opponent.

Notably, if they player holds Back on the Xbox 360 or Select on the PlayStation 3 in the Collection Room, they will be taken to the secret Statue Room.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, the Collection is not a room, but rather an outdoor area in White Space with a treasure chest in the middle. In gameplay, the Collection can be accessed from the main menu. Once there, the player can view the following collectibles:

  • Event: Recap movie scenes from the game. Each movie scene can be unlocked after viewing it during the main playthrough.

Trivia[]

  • The "Collection Room" track that plays in the Collection Room in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations is a remix of "Door Into Summer", the theme for Isolated Island, the intro stage of Knuckles' Chaotix.
  • The "Gallery" track that plays when looking at concept artwork and character bios in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations is a remix of the file select music from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
