Vesuvio[2] is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is a secret and ancient underground city, located on an island outside the southeastern coast of Soumerca, and a gigantic cavernous habitat underneath Mobius' largest volcano that serves as the residence to the surviving dragons.

Description[]

Vesuvio

The interior of Vesuvio, from Sonic the Hedgehog #155.

Vesuvio is a massive rocky volcano, entered via a hidden door in its side. On its interior it resembles a cavern, with multiple stalactites protruding from its ceiling, and several flowing streams of water and lava. At the center of Vesuvio is a large pool of magical lava, to which all dragons' spirits return to, and are reborn through.[2][3]

History[]

Past[]

According to legend, Vesuvio was eons ago the home to the ancestors of the present day Mobian Dragons, and that the Ancient Walkers forged the Magic Golden Rings on the banks of its lava lake. Under unknown circumstances, however, the dragon ancestors living in Vesuvio left the city, leaving it abandoned. During the First Robotnik War, when the dragons of Mobius came under oppression by Dr. Robotnik's forces, the few colonies of remaining dragons retreated to Vesuvio where they could live in safety. Joined by more surviving colonies, the dragons re-colonized Vesuvio and established a community there with Glint in charge. One such dragon evacuated to Vesuvio was Dulcy, who resided there for years, until eventually being exiled and having her Black Singe Ring ring removed by Glint as punishment for making contact with the outside world.[2]

The Price of Flame[]

Over a year later, Dulcy decided to return to Vesuvio after her exile, hoping its residents would forgive her. However, she was tracked by a group of Dr. Eggman's roboticized dragons, which transmitted the location of Vesuvio to him. Intending to conquer it and roboticize the remaining dragons, Eggman had his roboticized dragons attack the ancient city. Dulcy, however, managed to fight alongside the other free dragons residing in Vesuvio, and together they destroyed the roboticized dragons. Afterwards, due to her bravery and performance in battle, Dulcy was granted full pardon and had her citizenship in Vesuvio renewed, and became as well the official ambassador between the dragons in Vesuvio and the outside world.[2][4]

Trivia[]

  • Vesuvio is presumably named after the real-life mountain volcano Vesuvius in Italy.
