Once Dr. Eggman captures a Wisp, he transforms it into a Nega-Wisp, such as the Violet Wisp. Be careful, as these violent creatures will bark and bite! They also have the power to transform Sonic into a Violet Void.

— Description, Sonic Colors (Nintendo DS)[1]

The Violet Wisp (バイオレットウィスプ Baioretto Wisupu?) is a creature that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of Nega-Wisp that grants the Violet Void Color Power.

Description[]

Anatomy[]

Being a Nega-Wisp, the Violet Wisps have a more menacing look than other Wisps. Their heads are round with five curved-back appendages around them, making them look like swirls. They lack eyes, unlike normal Wisps, and instead have a serrated mouth that looks like a menacing grin. They also have three wide tentacles that stem from their heads and end in jagged points.

Characteristics and culture[]

Unlike the more civilized Wisps, the Violet Wisps are somewhat violent. Because of their mutation, the Violet Wisps' mindset is that of a feral animal, and they will threaten others by biting and barking.[1] However, they are not evil by nature and do not like Dr. Eggman like the rest of their race, despite once serving him. As such, they are more willing to side with Sonic than him. In fact, the Violet Wisps are halcyon, social, bright, energetic, and pure of heart.[2] They are likewise playful of nature, and enjoy spending most of their time playing with others. Due to their innate good nature, they can get along with everybody, except bad guys.[2] Also, rather than aliens, with their floaty movements, they are more like fairies.[2] Additionally, while they are not necessarily fighters, they are nonetheless brave and very helpful towards their friends and allies.

Powers and abilities[]

The Violet Wisps are able to levitate in midair at will, which serves as their main method of transportation.

The Violet Wisps are able to generate and store their own unique variant of a powerful energy known as Hyper-go-on inside their own bodies, which is their life source. However, due to their mutation, the Violet Wisps' Hyper-go-on has been corrupted, resulting in a darker and negative version of their Hyper-go-on. It is unclear to what extent they can use their own Hyper-go-on.

The Violet Wisps are able to pass on a fraction of their Hyper-go by phasing into the recipient. When organic beings or robots receive their Hyper-go-on, they can transform into the Violet Void which can suck objects into oblivion.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Colors[]

The Violet Wisps appear in both the Wii version and Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, though they only appear during cutscenes on the Wii. The Violet Wisps were originally normal Wisps, until they were captured by Dr. Eggman during Sonic Colors and siphoned dry of their Hyper-go-on in an attempt on the doctor's behalf to take over Sonic's world with a Mind Control Ray. This process, however, mutated these unfortunate Wisps into the corrupted Violet Wisps, who were forced to carry out Eggman's evil plans. Near the end of Sonic Colors, however, all of the Violet Wisps were returned to normal by the remainder of the Wisp race with their own Hyper-go-on, who had been freed by Sonic the Hedgehog.

In gameplay on the Nintendo DS version of the game, the Violet Wisps appear as Wisp Capsule power-ups that enable the Violet Void. The player encounters the Violet Wisps in Sweet Mountain and Asteroid Coaster.

Sonic Forces[]

In Sonic Forces, the Violet Wisps returned as Wisp Capsule power-ups for the Avatar's Void Wispon, which is the only Wispon that will accept them. With the Violet Wisp, the Void Wispon is able to perform its special action for a limited time. The player encounters the Violet Wisps in Spaceport, Prison Hall, Arsenal Pyramid, Park Avenue, Aqua Road, Capital City, Guardian Rock, Null Space and Imperial Tower.

Team Sonic Racing[]

In Team Sonic Racing, the Violet Wisps appear as Item Box power-ups on the game's race tracks. They are exclusively picked up by Power-Type racers, but can be transferred to other character types via Item Box Transfer. In gameplay, the Violet Wisp power-ups allow the player to suck in Rings, Item Boxes, and slow down opponents with the Violet Void.

In the comic tie-in, during one of the early races in Dodon Pa's Grand Prix, a Violet Wisp was used by Rouge as a part of a collaboration attack on Dr. Eggman, who had intruded on Team Sonic and Team Dark's race.[3]

In other media[]

IDW Publishing[]

After the events of Sonic Colors, a bunch of Violet Wisps and other fellow Wisps settled down on Sonic's world where they would help out the residents of Sonic’s world whenever they could.[4] Near the end of the Eggman War, Barricade Town, which served as a hub for Wispon distribution, was saved and subsequently conquered by mercenary duo Rough and Tumble. As a result of the duo taking over, many Wisps, including several Violet Wisps, were hoarded in Deployment Pods and Wispons by the two skunk brothers.[4]

In Barricade Town, the Violet Wisps found salvation when Sonic and Knuckles arrived to stop Rough and Tumble. During the heroes' subsequent fight with Rough and Tumble, the Violet Wisps and their fellow Wisps were convinced by Sonic to not let the two villains boss them around. As such, the Wisps in Rough and Tumble's Wispons left them, leaving their arsenal powerless and allowing Sonic and Knuckles to defeat them. Afterward, the now-liberated Violet Wisps decided to stick around and help the villagers defend their town by powering their Wispons.[4]
