The flying equivalent to the Egg Pawn, with a wide variety of offensive and defensive customizations.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Flapper (フラッパー[3] Furappā?), also referred to as the Egg Flapper,[1][2] is an enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced Pawn Series[4] Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman. Possessing no offensive capabilities, the Flappers are akin to surveillance drones. However, their design serves as the template for Badniks that are more equipped for battle.

Appearance[]

The Flappers look very similar to the Egg Pawns, possessing the round torso, black undercarriage, and dome-shaped head that the Egg Pawns have. However, the Flappers have airplane-like wings instead of arms, and two turbines on their backs that serve as jetpacks instead of legs. Additionally, while they have the Egg Pawns' pointy nose and panel-based mouth, they have flight visors instead of eyes.

The Flappers come in a variety of colors, although they are most typically orange-red with yellow noses.

During the Time Eater incident, they were redesigned with a security camera monitor on the bottom and a flight visor similar to the Egg Chaser.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Heroes[]

Heroes red flapper

A Flapper, from Sonic Heroes.

The Flappers made their first appearance in Sonic Heroes. In this game, they appear in Sea Gate, Seaside Hill, Ocean Palace, Grand Metropolis and Power Plant.

In gameplay, Flappers possess few hit points and no means of attacking the playable characters. When they spot the playable characters, they display a speech balloon with an exclamation point inside it. In terms of attack patterns, they either slowly fly back and forth within a certain area or hover in a stationary position. In fact, the only way the player can take damage due to the Flappers is by ramming into them. Their positions in midair are also often arranged so that the player can skip across them with the Homing Attack.

The easiest way to destroy a Flapper is by using Thunder Shoot to knock it out of the sky, leaving it open to any attack. If Thunder Shoot is leveled up to at least level 2, then it may be enough to destroy a Flapper in one shot. Also, upon a Flapper's destruction, the player is rewarded with 100 points.

Besides the regular Flappers, Sonic Heroes also features various kinds of Flapper variants, each with different weapons, such as the Cannon Flappers, Laser Flappers, Search Flappers, Bomb Flappers, Needle Flappers, Gun Flappers and Solid Flappers.

Sonic Rush[]

EggFlappersprite

Flappers also appear in Sonic Rush, which introduces two new types of Flapper: the Sea Pawn that moves underwater and the Battle Flapper. They appear as enemies in Water Palace, Night Carnival and Altitude Limit. Cannon Flappers and Laser Flappers also return.

Sonic and the Black Knight[]

In Sonic and the Black Knight, Flappers appeared in the Legacy Mission of each area. They can only be destroyed with the Homing Dash or glide.

Sonic Colors[]

In the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, the Flapper appears as an enemy. In this game, they look like the red Flappers that appeared in Sonic Rush. The player can only encounter them in Starlight Carnival. In gameplay, Flappers have no form of attack. Instead, like in Sonic Rush, they just hover back and forth around a certain spot.

Sonic Generations[]

WaterPalace2

A giant Sea Pawn, from the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, Flappers from somewhere across spacetime appear as enemies in Water Palace. In this version, they have the design they had in Sonic Rush; being more robust in design and with more cylindrical-shaped jet engines on their back.

There are three types of Flappers in this game, all unarmed. The first type is the orange one which appears in the non-watery sections. This type does not move around the area it is patrolling, making it just an obstacle for the player to take care of since they can sometimes encounter them in tight sections. The second type is the Sea Pawn, which is only encountered in underwater sections.

Other game appearances[]

Mario & Sonic series[]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games[]

In the Wii version and Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, the Flappers appear as non-playable characters.

In the Wii version of the game, the Flappers appear as obstacles in the Dream Platform event. Should the playable characters collide with a Flapper during this event, they will get slowed down and lose 500 points.

In the Nintendo DS version of the game, the Flappers appear as targets in the Dream Shooting, along with the Kikis and Egg Pawns. Occasionally, these Flappers will also carry Item Boxes. Besides Dream Shooting, Flappers also appear as obstacles in some of the gallery minigames.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[]

In the Wii version and Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, the Flappers appear as non-playable characters.

In the Wii version of the game, the Flappers appear as targets in the Individual and Team versions of the Dream Gliding event, where they must be shot down with Green Shells by the playable characters in order to earn points. This event also features both red and golden Flappers, with the red Flappers being worth two points each while golden Flappers are worth three points each. The Flappers also make an appearance as ornaments during the second segment of the Sonic World version of the Dream Figure Skating event, just before the ice rink assumes the likeness of the Death Egg Zone. As the prelude to this segment, a Flapper will fly down and nap the red Chaos Emerald from the rink. During the following segment, a second Flapper will join it. The first Flapper is later destroyed during the playable characters' routine when they jump into it, and has its Chaos Emerald taken from it. The second Flapper is subsequently subjected to the same attacks from the characters, but survives the onslaught.

In the Nintendo DS version of the game, the Flappers appear as targets in the Ski Shooting event. During this event, Flapper will fly by carrying pairs of targets, which do not give any points when hit, and will drop their targets, meaning that points cannot be scored for these either. Flappers also appear in the Rocket Ski Jumping event, where they sometimes fly onto the screen to disrupt the playable character's flight path by making them collide with them. Should this happen, the playable character will lose speed and altitude. Also, in the Ultimate Figure Skating event, a huge Flapper appears as the boss during the Sonic Medley routine. To overcome this Flapper, the player has to adjust their rhythm.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[]

In the Wii version and Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Flappers appear as enemy-like obstacles that are referred to as Egg Flappers.[2]

FlapperLondonGames

A Flapper in Dream Fencing, from the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

In the Wii version of the game, Flappers make an appearance as enemies during the Dream Fencing event. Here, Flappers will occasionally appear in the arena and begin hovering around it in straight lines. Should the playable characters get hit by these Flappers, they will get knocked back and lose some of their health. While the playable characters can destroy these Flappers with a single thrust, they will continue to respawn. Destroying a Flapper in this event will occasionally cause it to drop a Power Core though. The Flappers also appear during one of the mini-games in London Party. Here, the player has to count the number of Flappers that fly across the screen.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, the Flappers make an appearance in the game's story mode. In this mode, a Flapper was harassing a Chao and Omochao alongside an Egg Pawn until it was destroyed by Bowser Jr.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, a badge of the Egg Flapper can also be obtained from the badge machine.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games[]

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, blue-colored Flappers resembling those from Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games appear as obstacles in the Golf Plus event on Hole 5. In this event, they patrol the field while emitting yellow spotlight beams similar to the Search Flappers' that will turn the golf balls entering them into iron balls for one stroke, making it more difficult for it to bounce.

Sonic at the Olympic Games (2020)[]

In Sonic at the Olympic Games (2020), Flappers are referred to as Egg Flappers.[1] In this game, they appear in some EX disciplines and mainly act as obstacles. In the "Shooting - Trap" event, they acts as a bonus target; if the player can shoot these Flappers they will get one of three power-ups:

  • Extra points: Increases the player's score by 10%.
  • Clay: Subsequent clay discs fired move in slow motion, which makes it easier to shoot them.
  • Reticle: Enlarges the player's target reticle for a specific period of time.

In other media[]

Archie Comics[]

Flapper Pre-SGW

A pair of Egg Flappers, from Sonic the Hedgehog #171.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Flappers (named Egg Flappers in this media) were created by Dr. Eggman to replace his decommissioned SWATbots. When the fourth Enerjak surfaced, however, the Egg Flappers were destroyed while attempting to subdue the chaos demigod.

After the events of Worlds Collide, the Egg Flappers became nearly identical to their game counterparts. In addition, Breeze Media has bought several outdated Egg Flappers to serve as her staff.

IDW Publishing[]

FlapperIDW

A Flapper, from Sonic the Hedgehog #1.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, after Sonic the Hedgehog thwarted Dr. Eggman in their last encounter, the doctor disappeared while his Flappers and the rest of his Badnik army remained. Without a leader however, the Flappers were directionless and no longer a unified threat.[5] Even so, they would still randomly attack anyone they came across[6] (although such incidents were more accidental than aggression-based[5]). Eventually, the Flappers came under the control of Neo Metal Sonic, who made them and their fellow Badniks more cohesive.[5][7]

FlapperStalker

A Flapper watching Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #3.

Later on, a Flapper began secretly following Sonic around, discretely observing the hedgehog from a distance as he traveled from town to town to stop the Badniks attacking them. Additionally, Neo Metal Sonic was watching the visual feedback belonging to the Flapper, which he used to plan the Badniks' and his own next moves.[5][6][8] Eventually, the Flapper followed Sonic to Windmill Village. When it spied on Sonic and the Chaotix while the heroes fought some Badniks however, Charmy Bee noticed the Flapper and destroyed it, much to the anger of Neo Metal Sonic who was watching its feedback.[9]
