Result: We have contacted Lizzunchbox at Wikia staff, expressing an interest in becoming an officially affiliated community. We will create a new discussion if and when Lizzunchbox gives us more info.
Has anyone noticed that some Wikia wikis are now officially affiliated with the games and companies they are designed for? I think that's pretty cool. Wikia are also looking to expand. So even though Sega already have an online presence, and even though there are a ton of other Sonic wikis out there, and even though we cover more than just the games, I thought I'd ask what everyone thinks about this. -- Supermorff (talk) 12:13, October 18, 2012 (UTC)

I'm not so sure if Retro members could agree with our standards, but I'd say it's worth a shot getting affiliated with SEGA. This would be a big chance for our little community. Template:Sig/SG79 13:54, October 18, 2012 (UTC)
Per Sacor. This would be awesome. --Template:SUsig14:16, October 18, 2012 (UTC)
Template:Le Solace

I'm on full support of this. Myself 123 18:43, October 18, 2012 (UTC)

And everyone supporting this is aware of how much it might change how we do things? -- Supermorff (talk) 19:21, October 18, 2012 (UTC)

There will obviously be changes to our style, depending on how Sega might possibly accept how we create our pages. If consensus decides on being affiliated with Sega, then we should all realize how things may be different in the future. Template:Sig/SG79 19:40, October 18, 2012 (UTC)
Yes; I am aware of, and prepared for, any necessary changes that will need to be made. Template:SolaceSig 19:46, October 18, 2012 (UTC)

It'd be nice to be given an opportunity to finally affiliate with SEGA themselves, so naturally I'm in full support of this for just that reason. I imagine it'd give us a chance to get our hands on some developer info much easier. Sure, I'm a bit concerned as to how this might change our style of doing things, but that's what negotiations are for, assuming all parties involved are willing to do so. Lloyd the Cat"I don't die. Being affiliated with SEGA is awesome, true we might have to change our style of editing, but it's still a big opportunity for the Wiki. Template:KatHalloweenSig

I can only imagine great things coming out of this. Full support. Template:SilverSig 11:24, October 19, 2012 (UTC)

I doubt that SEGA themselves would go out of their way to request we do anything differently then we do, but I'm fine if they want to make any major changes. I support. --Template:BFSig 00:28, October 23, 2012 (UTC)

Template:SonicTheHedgehogDude

I have seen some people on Youtube already think this. I have full support in this upgrade. --The Shadow Of Darkness (talk) 01:49, October 23, 2012 (UTC)

I support, but only tentatively. Should SEGA want us to make any major changes I would have to honestly reconsider, as affiliated or not we have always been a big, if not the, resource for Sonic information.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round 05:28, October 23, 2012 (UTC)

If anything, you could have SEGA's blessing and perhaps a link on their site without being officially affiliated. A while back, StarWars.com had redesigned their site. One of the things we noticed at Wookieepedia was the discontinuation of the Databank, and it being replaced with the Encyclopedia... with every entry of theirs linking directly to its corresponding article on Wookieepedia. Since Wookieepedia is covered by the Creative Commons license, this means that anyone can freely distribute information or link to us as they see fit. Though, afterward, representatives from Lucasfilm contacted our founder and explained that linking to us without our knowledge was indeed a misstep. However, Wookieepedia has an official blog on StarWars.com (our founder hasn't yet finished his entry, but we'll have one and other administrators can write for it, too). We are officially recognized by Lucasfilm, they use us, link to us, talk about us, promote us, and at events, we need to adhere to their policies, as we are an entity of them.

Being officially recognized could be an option for you. It would also give you the notoriety so that way you can promote yourself in events, such as conventions. Perhaps have a table at a convention, run by a few users. You would need to contact SEGA's licensing department for more information on how you would go about creating promotional materials and how you would need to conduct the booth, but it's an option, and it would be another way to become recognized officially, without the worry of SEGA taking an active role in the management of the wiki. Okay, guys. I've left a message with Lizzunchbox at Wikia Community Central. We'll leave it with Wikia for now to proceed. -- Supermorff (talk) 14:34, October 23, 2012 (UTC)

Fair enough, but should SEGA suggest any major changes that would impact how we work or our uniqueness, I suggest we reconsider. If they don't, then this will be very interesting.... *looks at my fan-characters* .....Yeah, we may also have a slight problem in that department.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round 04:25, October 25, 2012 (UTC)

They don't have the time to force us to do anything anyways. It's not like we're going to be full on partners with them. No need to think so negatively, Kagi. --Template:BFSig 20:14, October 25, 2012 (UTC)
Where being an "official community" will come into play would probably be for conventions and other such events. Since you would be official, it would be in your best interest to represent the wiki community at the occasional convention. However, if you do so, there will need to be a number of things that you would need to adhere to. For one, there would need to be someone at the table who is 18 or older, as many conventions will not allow 13-year-olds on the floor after a certain hour, and anyone under 18 would need to be accompanied by someone who is of legal age. This may vary with promoters, but the events coordinators for Celebration 6 had that policy. Also, any promotional material would need to be approved by a member of SEGA Licensing. Someone from that department who coordinates fan events and relations would need to pre-approve all of your promotional material designs before they are sent to the printer. Your materials would need to have the SEGA copyright text on it, along with ™ and © beside any depictions of logotype. All images used would need to be promotional artwork used solely for the purpose of a brochure, flyer, banner, etc.
It seems daunting, and having to get stuff approved over and over and over before you can even get the material printed can be extremely tedious, it is also a great learning experience, and it gives the wiki some notoriety. It's in the events and conventions angle that I think this affiliation will have the most power, rather than the wiki itself. And if you guys are up to the responsibility of it, it would be a good thing to consider. Trak Nar Ramble on 09:45, October 27, 2012 (UTC)

I'm not being negative Bullet, I'm being realistic. I was just thinking about how many people (likely myself included) would see the affiliation as... well probably their only way to possibly share their fan-characters with SEGA. I mean seriously, how many people here on SNN with fan-characters would pass up that opportunity? It may or may not cause problems.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round 05:31, October 28, 2012 (UTC)

I have a fan character but I would not want to share him with Sega, he's just for fun really. The problems I would forsee is restriction of information, primarily in conjuction with upcoming games; On more than one occasion, we have adding leaked information about upcoming games and I think Sega would be less than happy if we revealed information before Sega wanted to.
