umm... I am just recently becoming a sonic fan and umm... when I was small I used to play this sonic game. I dont remember what it was called but I think there were 2 playable characters sonic & some red person. I asked my uncle and he said it was sonics sister, was he right?

Anyway, clearing up the issues. Sonic and Knuckles met in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and were rivals because Knuckles thought Sonic was a threat to the Master Emerald when it turns out Dr. Robotnik wanted to steal the Master Emerald. After the ordeal of Robotniks betrayal and Sonic helping Knuckles, they became friends but still had some more work to do in Sonic & Knuckles where they worked together to stop Robotnik launching his Death Egg.
