Result: The Location template has been improved and useable for mainspace articles.
Hello everyone. Ultrasonic9000 here with a discussion I'll like to bring up.

Recently, we have discovered an potential good template here on SNN, made by CaptainCj, which is used for locations. It looks like this:

There is a lot thoughts that comes to one when seeing this template. For me and Myself 123 it is nice-looking, but it does seems misplaced here on SNN as its layout is very different from the other templates on SNN such as Template:Infobox character, Template:Infobox item and Template:TransformationInfobox. Still, in my opinion, it would be a waste to just ignore it.

Because it is different, it leaves the question of what to do with it.

  • On one hand, we can just spare us the work and just forget about it and completely ignore its existence.
  • On the other hand, we could take Template:Location and edit it so it matches the other infoboxes' design and layout
  • On the third hand, it is a pretty neat design for it and seems to be the modern take on infoboxes across the web, so how about we try to implement that layout on all the other templates that we use around here such as Template:Character, Template:Item etc. so they match the Template:Location?

This is a matter that must be settled for the fact is that Template:Location has a lot of potential, and as more people see it, the more they'll try to implement it on other articles, which will only lead to more inconsistency on the articles. That we cannot stop. Even I find it hard to resist using the Template:Location.

So I ask, what is your opinion on this. Editing it? Removing it? Implementing it? Forgetting it? I ask you of the best course of action that do you deem the best.Ultrasonic9000 (talk) 11:31, June 3, 2013 (UTC)

Just use it as is. At some point we plan to improve existing infoboxes, and we'll update Location at the same time. -- Supermorff (talk) 13:34, June 3, 2013 (UTC)

Well, not to have any doubts about it, but "at some point" could be pushed away for another time, and when it is that time, it is all forgotten. Is it that you plan to have a major reediting of the existing infoboxes at some point?Ultrasonic9000 (talk) 19:05, June 3, 2013 (UTC)

Well since I was the one who actually discovered this infobox that was never used, I believe I have a say to it. I honestly think that it should indeed be implemented into the other info boxes. But since the image part makes the image a bit larger or actual size I'm sacred that if we use it on character pages the image could cover a large portion of the page. As I may have said before, that infoboxes should get updated look like all banner templates have now got, this location template's showy design and sealed structure could be good base to give new, improvement look for infoboxes. Depending on, if Supermorff or other adamins have other plans to improve these infoboxes at "at some point", could it be this moment now? I would like to participate in this now, that I have yet time left here, we could do updated looking infoboxes at this wiki's sandbox, but now on I'm waiting what others like to said about this. Otherwise I support the third choice, that Ultrasonic gave at the beginning. - MarioSonic (talk) 21:51, June 3, 2013 (UTC)

I like this template, only it looks awful. Once it gets modified, then we should use it on mainspace articles. BlueSpeeder (talk) 22:08, June 3, 2013 (UTC)

Ultrasonic> That is what I said, yes.
MarioSonic> I already changed the infoboxes once, to look similar to this, when we tried to change the skin. Somebody changed them back again when the skin wasn't kept. If you felt like it, you could go through the history of infoboxes and change them right now.
Splash> Image sizing is easily fixed. It shouldn't be doing that.
BlueSpeeder> You think it looks awful? Why? Everyone else seems to quite like it. I definitely prefer it to the infoboxes we use at present. -- Supermorff (talk) 09:08, June 4, 2013 (UTC)
I also think it looks a bit ugly. I'd prefer something round with only two colors being used. I'd rather not use multiple shades of blue. --Bullet Francisco (talk) Contributions Editcount 09:26, June 4, 2013 (UTC)

Personally, my eyes don't like it at all. I say change the colors at least; then we could definitely use this infobox. -- Shadowunleashed13 (talk) 14:16, June 4, 2013 (UTC)

I'll be honest in this case, the blue coloring does feel too bright and the coding is sort of here and there to understand. There was kinda hard to know where for example the caption is able to get visible. But I would like to announce that, there are now two template choices at the wiki's sandbox to choose at, as the first one is little bit modified from the CaptainCj version to resemble the other ones. The second one is modified from the most recent one that is now being used. I do modified the infobox to have now two colors (the main color and basic white) and font size has been shrunk to fit in and the template's width is the same as the first example's. We can also decide if some infoboxes would need to change its color to better one (yea the light purple doesn't feel that good for some reason). Also do you guys feel that we could have "show and hide" thingy in each section of infobox? - MarioSonic (talk) 15:25, June 4, 2013 (UTC)

The color actually looks pleasing to me. It matches with our level infobox template which I think is good because some articles actually have both of them on due to them sharing a level and a location such as the Spagonia page sharing it's info with the Rooftop Run level. User:SplashTheHedgehog/Signature3 18:48, June 4, 2013 (UTC)

In wiki's sandbox, there's now updated Location infobox with similar style of updated, second character infobox. The several sections are updated as first appearance, games and media sections are added and edited, while the picture section needs to add the whole picture file's name like other recent templates. Give some comment if there's something to add on. - MarioSonic (talk) 21:35, June 4, 2013 (UTC)

EDIT: Nothing special, all infoboxes are now updated with slight changes. - MarioSonic (talk) 23:51, June 5, 2013 (UTC)

Only one complaint: the text is too small now. -- Shadowunleashed13 (talk) 16:25, June 6, 2013 (UTC)
Granted, it does felt that text size of 84% wouldn't match well at first (same thinking like you do have there), but the thing is that it is mostly the only good choice, while pushing to the 90% does make the sealing little odd. I can do fixing there with editing line-heights on certain sections, but infoboxes on certain wiki sites do actually feature the same text size as well with certain examples here, here and here. - MarioSonic (talk) 17:45, June 6, 2013 (UTC)
Okay, it's not so bad. It doesn't make my eyes hurt, but it will still take some getting used to. -- Shadowunleashed13 (talk) 20:47, June 6, 2013 (UTC)

Well it seems that template:Location got updated (if it has been I didn't noticed) even though it's in the shape of the other templates it annoys me that it's like that. I think we should update all the infobox templates to look like that as it would make us stick out from other wikis have this unique layout. Plus no one ever said that we would all agree on changing it. I'd rather have it changed back. User:SplashTheHedgehog/Signature3 01:21, June 10, 2013 (UTC)

I don't see any complaints. Is everyone satisfied with the current look of the infoboxes? -- Shadowunleashed13 (talk) 18:50, June 18, 2013 (UTC)
