Forums: Index > Questions > What do you think the next mainstream Sonic game will (or should) be like?

Yay! Another topic! This is about, well the title pretty much speaks for itself. Know that I did NOT create this topic to bash old Sonic games or new Sonic games. If you prefer one style over the other, you can say that, but DON'T say that 2-D is better than 3-D or vice versa, because usually, that leads to a huge internet riot, and NOTHING can tick me off more than riots of any kind. --SSRider 02:05, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Id say that the Hedgehog Engine still needs improovemets.. heck they should just start again and use bits of programming from it to improve the engine used in the Sonic Adventure series. Another thing is to change the boost function to be more simple, like instead of relying on rings or a boost metre, you can access it limitless when your running at top speed to begin with. I find it a clever method to put the element of speed back into Sonic games but it could be more subtle. As for Unleash methods of switching to a classic style of gameplay, I say they should have seperate Acts for such styles that putting them together with regular acts. Another thing is to go with the classic plot of Robotnik building some doomsday machine than relying on religion. It's fun smashing giant size robots.--Mystic Monkey 15:59, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, I can't say anything about the Hedgehog Engine (no 360), but the boost does sound interesting. One thing I'd be intersted in seeing is Silver on the Wii, using the motion sensitivity for his psychokinesis. I say amen to the Unleashed bit, because it wasn't as smooth as they say. You could clearly see and feel it slow down, which kinda ruins the momentum. As for Eggman, I don't give a wit what means he uses, I just want to see 'him' defeated, instead of some rogue robot or monster.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 17:34, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
But when was the last time you see him defeated? Usually he just summon some monster and faffs around in his Egg-o-matic.--Mystic Monkey 17:56, 18 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, I meant him actually controlling the Robot/Monster, and to be defeated.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 18:01, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

P.S. I thought it was called the eggmobile?

Works eitherway depending on where you live. Brits call it the Egg-o-matic due to fleetway comics but it doesn't really matter.--Mystic Monkey 18:57, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

I think SEGA should think about making Eggman the main villian too, rather than having a giant monster being the true villian. I don't really care about whether the game's in 2-D or 3-D as long as the gameplay's functional. I like the idea of boosting automatically instead of manually too; it seems sort of cheap in my opinion. I would at least make Sonic, Amy, Tails, Cream, and Knuckles playable characters, and they should each have their own paths they can take in the levels they dash through. If Tails does have playability in the next game, he should "be free" like in Sonic 2 and Sonic: 15th Anniversary. I don't really like the idea of him being cooped up in a machine for the entire game, maybe just for a "Sky Chase" themed level. I also think SEGA should allow characters to upgrade certain attacks by spending their total collected rings in either a shop in the main menu or a shop in a hub. The only thing after all that stuff I think they should include is a multiplayer mode with different options to play from, maybe even a Sonic the Fighters/Smash Bros. styled battle mode. --SSRider 20:00, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, while that sounds a bit like a remake of Sonic Adventure, that also sounds pretty good. I'd prefer to have to find the items myself, at least for certain ones. As for the other stuff, I would personally like a Wi-Fi function where you can take on challenges other people put up, and earn stuff from it. As for multiplayer, I'd like for the battles to be held in the hub areas, where there would be plenty of space to fight, run, fly, climb, and whatnot. Finally, I'd also like to see Tails fight personally, and instead of just throwing dummy rings around, you'd be able to target enemies, and throw the rings like bombs. Of course, I'd also like to see his original moveset from Sonic Adventure included, with some additions.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 20:20, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps "shop" wasn't the best word to use. When I said use rings to upgrade attacks, I meant use them like Sonic Unleashed used the EXP, like increase Sonic's top speed. I too would prefer finding upgrades around stages or hubs. --SSRider 23:10, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh, well that makes sense. I would go for that. As for the upgrades, I would just prefer that they be easier to find than Knuckles' upgrade that allows his version of the lightspeed attack.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 23:15, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

I like the shopping system in latest games, gives a sort of RPG feel to it. Though when it comes to Upgrades I hate it how, though useful, they cover the character with junk.--Mystic Monkey 23:28, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration. Although it would be nice if they weren't all pieces of clothing. Maybe something like what they did in Sonic '06, but I would like to see upgrades again. It gives you a reason to play through again.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 23:51, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

In my ideas for Fan games, all the upgrades are replaced by "Chaos Drives" and in my idea for Mystic Monkeys fan game you can get certain powers depending on what custom shoes you got.--Mystic Monkey 00:00, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

eh, I don't really like the shoes idea, unless the effects compound on each other. Otherwise you'd have to by different shoes for different missions.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 00:12, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

I say BioWare gets on with erecting Sonic Chronicles 2, whilst Sega gets on with Sonic Heroes 2.

Sorry Launchballer, many fangames have beaten SEGA to Sonic Heroes 2. The game I expect, however, is this: I read an article on why, psychologically, the older Sonic games (Adventure 2 and back) are appealing and the others were not-so-much *cough*shadow the hedgehog*, I am basing my expectations off of this. I expect a classic platforming Sonic game that doesn't rely on linear and pre-set paths (Storybook series, Sonic Unleashed Day Stage) and the Maximum speed Sonic the Hedgehog gets actually takes effort (That means Sonic Unleashed's Daytime Speed with a slower acceleration and minimum speed boosters). I want a game that gives me the feeling that there is an inevitability that i might actually fall (Like the Genesis games where you could run up a wall and possibly fall off). My expectations are a little too specific but, to put it in summary, A Sonic adventure-style game with the ability to speed up ike in Sonic Unleashed--Milotheechidna 16:46, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

P.S. I don't care what characters there are, as long as they make sense in the story. As for upgrades however, I like them as long as they look cool (I LOVE the way Knuckles' upgrades look in SA2)--Milotheechidna 16:49, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, I too would love to see Sonic Chronicles 2. Howver, I'm glad someone here shares my opinion. Fuse the old good stuff and the new good stuff, and you get an excellent game.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 16:57, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Sonic Unleashed fused old and new, I don't think it's that great.--Mystic Monkey 22:45, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

I didn't mean 2D and 3D (though if they did it while in the air, that could work). I meant old 3D and new 3D.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 22:51, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, I do have a solution which I been wanting to apply to a Sonic fan game... How about his controls are that of Adventure series, but after he reaches top speed it switches to something simular to StoryBook controls? Oh if only I could make 3D games. >_<--Mystic Monkey 23:28, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, if you're talking about Speed Break or Time Break, that does sound interesting.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 23:43, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

No, not that. It really be better if I showed you than describe but cannot show you since I can't make games. Basically faster Sonic gets the more rounded his movement becomes simular to skateboarding games (Example; Tony Hawk), but while he is slow it's Adventure style this way it be more suited for both players who either races to the goal, likes to explore surroundings or both!--Mystic Monkey 23:53, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, I like the prospect of turning tight corners (NOT Drifting like in Unleashed) at high speeds, then blasting off. Also, you have to admit, Time Break was a high point in Secret of the Rings. They've done the boost enough, but the enemy moving in slow motion around you, evading normally inescapable traps, and so-on would be excellent!--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 00:04, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

I also been thinking of that as well as a sort of updated shot at Chaos Control since in shadows game there were 2 different versions depending on Boss or Action Stage.--Mystic Monkey 00:25, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

So let me see what everybody expects to be the closest to perfect Sonic game:

  • Character gameplay variety
  • Sonic Adventure platforming
  • Decent gaming engine
  • Robotnik (I'm sorry, Dr.Eggman) is the enemy
  • Sonic Unleashed speed
  • Chaos control use similar to Time Break
  • Tight corners
  • Non-stupid upgrades

Am I right?--Milotheechidna 02:54, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, not so much Chaos Control, more like Sonic speeds up so much that everything else goes slo-mo. Oh, and don't forget decent graphics and plot.--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 03:00, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Id like it if Eggman was called Dr. Robotnik more, Awsome robots, also Character selection! BTW I am noting all this for fangame ideas.--Mystic Monkey 13:11, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

You mean Character selection for different stories relating to that character, right? You know, Adventure/DX play?--Kagimizu-Seeya 'round~ 14:32, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, well, perhaps more like Sonic Adventure 2 as it be best to concentrate on Sonic, but still give players the chance to play as other characters.--Mystic Monkey 14:57, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
