Monsters born of Dark Gaia with exceptionally high intelligence can take on a humanoid appearance like these fiends. Left alone long enough, these dark conjurers will summon forth an endless supply of Frights. Cut them off at the scource!

— Description, Sonic Unleashed[1]

The Fright Master (スプーキーマスター Supūkī Masutā?, lit. "Spooky Master") is an enemy that appears in the nighttime Stages in Sonic Unleashed. They are a variant of Dark Gaia's Minions that resemble wizard-like phantoms. Their signature ability is to perform spells that summon Dark Frights to the battlefield.

Appearance[]

The Fright Masters' basic appearance is that of a humanoid phantom-like wizard. They are dressed in cyan clothes with black shadows have a pointy hat and cape, and are decorated with lavender symbols. The only parts on their body that are shown are their lavender eyes and some of their dark faces. They are also always carrying a red staff with a head that resembles a Red Fright.

Overview[]

The Fright Masters and the rest of Dark Gaia's Minions came into being when Dark Gaia broke apart at the beginning of Sonic Unleashed due to its premature awakening by Dr. Eggman. These fragments were then spread across the earth and became Dark Gaia's Minions, with the Fright Masters amongst them. Due to being born with high intelligence, they are able to take on a near-perfect humanoid appearance.[1] They first appear in Rooftop Run Night Act III: The Great Aqueduct in the Wii/PlayStation 2 version and Dragon Road Night Act 1 in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version.

In gameplay, the Fright Masters can call Dark Frights to the battlefield to overwhelm the player. The Fright Masters have no upper limit to the number of Dark Frights they can summon, but they can only call forth a limited number of them at once. Once a Fright Master calls forth Dark Frights, they will act independently on their own and remain on the battlefield, even if the Fright Master that summoned them is destroyed. Fright Masters always appear alongside other enemies; in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, there is only one Fright Master per group, while in the Wii/PlayStation 2 version, they can appear in pairs as well.

In battle, the Fright Masters focus on summoning Dark Frights to aid them. As soon as a Dark Fright is killed, however, the Fright Masters will instantly try to call forth a new one to take its place. When directly combating the player, the Fright Masters will attack Sonic by hitting him with their staff by using it like a club or, in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, by hammering it down on Sonic when enlarged. When trying to avoid damage, they will move around in the air in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, or alternatively, float out of attack range or teleport short distances away on the Wii/PlayStation 2 version, all of which make it harder for the player to target them. It should also be noted that in the Wii/PlayStation 2 version, the Fright Masters have much faster movements.

Upon the reconstruction of Dark Gaia by Dr. Eggman, all of the Fright Masters (along with the other types of Dark Gaia's minions) were returned to the beast, who was later defeated and sealed within the planet's core.

Powers and abilities[]

The Fright Masters are able to move into an area by emerging from black puddles on the ground. As a Dark Gaia minion, the Fright Masters can possess people by latching onto the deepest, darkest part of the heart, and generate despair, negative emotions or even erratic behavior that are completely opposite to the person's personality.

The Fright Masters are born with exceptionally high intelligence. They are capable of casting summoning spells that can bring an endless supply of Dark Frights to their location to aid them, though they can only call forth a limited number of Dark Frights at once. It is unknown if the Fright Masters create the Dark Frights they summon, or simply bring them from another location. When casting their Dark Fright summoning spells, the Fright Masters form a circular seal underneath them and send out purple orbs that becomes Dark Frights. They can also use spells to instantly teleport them over short distances, and have the innate ability to levitate above ground and move through mid-air rather quickly.

The Fright Masters possess some skills in stick fighting, being able to use their staves in close combat to hit their opponents using quick and swift movements. As a supplementary ability to their stick fighting, the Fright Masters can enlarge their staves, giving them greater range and attack power.

Trivia[]

  • In the Wii/PlayStation 2 version, any Dark Frights summoned by the Fright Masters will release orbs upon their defeat, while in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version, the summoned Dark Frights leave nothing behind after being defeated.
