The Gapsule[1] (ガプセル[2] Gapuseru?) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Capsule-based Badnik created by Dr. Robotnik, who used it during the second part of the Angel Island incident.

Appearance[]

While in disguise, the Gapsule looks like a standard Capsule. A large, gray container, it features pedestals beneath it and a yellow switch. It also has yellow and black hazard stripes on it. When it reveals itself, it will reveal two brown eyes and two long, gray "arms" with giant iron balls at the ends.

History[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[]

In Sonic & Knuckles, and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik left the Gapsule in Flying Battery Zone to pose as a fake Capsule. While wandering there, Sonic and Tails accidentally triggered it, making the machine reveal itself and attack them. Fortunately, the heroes destroyed the fake Capsule.

Later, a re-built Gapsule would be triggered by Knuckles in Flying Battery Zone, making it attack him. However, the machine was destroyed by the echidna.

Other game appearances[]

Sonic Jam (Game.com)[]

In Sonic Jam for the Game.com, the Gapsule appears as one of the bosses in Mushroom Hill Zone.

Powers and abilities[]

The Gapsule can disguise itself as a Capsule, making it look exactly the same as them. Its arms can also be extended. It is also highly durable, being immune to blunt attacks from the caliber of foes like Sonic and Knuckles.

Battle[]

The Gapsule is the boss of Flying Battery Zone Act 1 in Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the third boss in Sonic & Knuckles. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, it is the sixteenth boss in Sonic and Tails' stories and the fifteenth in Knuckles' story. In Sonic & Knuckles, it is fought by Sonic or Knuckles, while in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, it can also be fought by Tails either alone or with Sonic. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy.

Boss guide[]

The boss arena is a large flat field with a single Capsule in the middle of it. After hitting its switch, the Capsule will reveal itself to be the Gapsule, thus beginning the fight. The attack pattern consists of the Gapsule's arms moving around in the air, swinging back and forth. Between intervals, the Gapsule will flash, one of its arms will straighten and stay still briefly. The arm will then strike at the location the player was at when its arm stopped moving.

To defeat the Gapsule, the player must stand on its switch long enough to make the robot attempt to attack there. If the player jumps or moves out of the way quickly enough, the Gapsule will hit itself instead, dealing one hit of damage.

After hitting itself six times, the Gapsule will explode, and the Goal Plate will fall down into the arena.

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly, there exists unused sprites for a mid-boss known as Egg Janken in Studiopolis Zone's files from Sonic Mania.[3] The boss has a very strong resemblance in design to the Gapsule and would have utilized a Rock-Paper-Scissors gimmick for their fight.
