Gimmick Mountain is a strange mountain. The caverns in the mountains are full of modern machines. Use gears and Conveyor Belts to advance. But be careful not to go too fast.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)[1]

Gimmick Mountain Zone (ギミックマウンテン[1] Gimikku Maunten?, lit. "Gimmick Mountain") is the fifth Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit). As with the other Zones in this game, Gimmick Mountain Zone consists of two standard Acts followed by a shorter, third Act which contains the Zone's boss.

Description[]

Gimmick Mountain Zone is set in the caves of a "strange" mountain that are dominated by modern day machinery.[1]

Story[]

On his quest to rescue Tails from the clutches of Dr. Robotnik, Sonic passes through Gimmick Mountain Zone, and locates the Chaos Emerald hidden in its metallic passageways. Then, after a battle with one of Dr. Robotnik's Master Robots, Charge Master, Sonic destroys the Prison Egg located in the Zone and runs off towards Scrambled Egg Zone to continue his journey.

Gameplay[]

Gimmick Mountain is generally more maze-like than the preceding levels, and features an abundance of railcarts, conveyor belts, and flywheels, in addition to large pits of spikes.

Overview[]

Act 1[]

The first Act begins on a flat stretch of ground with a shaft that has flywheels above it. The player has to jump onto the lowest Flywheel, then use it and the other Flywheels to ascend to the top of the shaft. At the top of the shaft, the player has to navigate two conveyor belts over spike pits, the first of which faces left, while the second of which faces right. The player then travels through a tunnel leading to the top of a steep and downwards, left-facing slope with an Invincibility monitor on its right. When heading down the slope, the player will encounter a series of spike pits and conveyor belts which lead to an upwards shaft lined with spikes, which is composed of multiple "levels" of conveyor belts which the player has to travel up along. Each level's conveyor belt moves in the opposite direction of the one below it. Additionally, the player can walk through the right wall on the base level to reach an even lower level with a 1-Up monitor. At the top of the shaft, the player will find a railcart, which they have to ride down a slope on and across a gap before crashing at the foot of another shaft. Traveling up this shaft leads to another railcart, which faces left this time. The player has to ride it down a slope, across the same gap, to another track filled with spikes that the player has to bust through with the cart. Alternatively, the player can jump off the slope to reach a 1-Up monitor, although it is advised that the player does so with caution, as activating the railcart first and jumping off of it can leave the player trapped with no way to progress past the long stretch of spikes. Eventually, the railcart will hit a wall, prompting the player to jump up a ledge. Continue left from here to find the Bonus Plate.

Act 2[]

The second Act starts out on a flat area which leads to a large pit of spikes with two opposite-facing conveyor belts and two small moving platforms bridging it. Successfully crossing the pit leads the player to a large, upwards slope which they have to walk up of in order to progress rightwards to an upwards shaft with two flywheels. At the top of the shaft, the player will encounter a downwards slope and a ledge, which split the path. Should the player jump up to the ledge to the top path, they will have to navigate a series of platforms and conveyor belts in order to cross a large pit. If the player falls off, they will either drop to the bottom path, or fall into the pit of spikes below it. Should the player instead travel down the slope and down the bottom path, they will have to jump across a pit of spikes using the ramp provided. This leaves the player at the bottom of a large shaft with conveyor belts and a moving platform inside it. The player has to use these to ascend to the top, at which both paths converge, leading down a tunnel past spikes and Springs to the Bonus Plate.

Act 3[]

The third Act starts out on a flat area which leads to a pit with a tunnel at its bottom. Shortly after said tunnel, the player has to walk into another one which deposits them next to a pit of spikes with conveyor belts over it. Navigating this section will lead the player to a floating platform which they have to stand on in order to activate. Once activated, the platform will move upwards along a set path, and the player will have to jump off of it in order to reach another moving platform. The second platform initially travels upwards, but it can carry the player into a bed of spikes if not jumped off in time. The platform then begins moving horizontally, and the player has to jump back on it, and avoid being shoved off onto the spikes below until the platform reaches its destination. Shortly after reaching its destination, the platform will fall into a small pit of spikes, forcing the player to jump off of it to avoid losing a try. From here, the player must use a Spring to ascend a shaft and reach the boss arena.

Boss[]

Main article: Charge Master
GimmickMtBoss

The Charge Master, from Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit).

The boss of Gimmick Mountain Zone is the Charge Master, a robotic boar that charges from one end of the screen to another, dislodging heavy rocks from the ceiling when it impacts. On the plus side, it charges so hard and so fast that the mecha stuns itself when it collides with the side of the arena, retracting its spikes and giving Sonic a short window to do some damage.

Chaos Emerald location[]

The red Chaos Emerald in Gimmick Mountain Zone is located in Act 2. Here, the player can find the Chaos Emerald by walking through a wall on the left of the first large slope's top. This leads the player into a hidden tunnel with a series of converyor belts, spikes, and flywheels, which, when successfully navigated lead to the Chaos Emerald. Additionally, two 1-Up monitors are hidden along this path, and can be located by walking through two hidden sections of the wall to the left of the flywheel section.
