Gothic Gardens is the fifth level in Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. An evergreen land of castles and gardens, this island is defined by its gothic buildings and medieval gardens. Due to Dr. Eggman, the island's environment was messed up by the by-products from the doctor's mining operations on Ragna Rock. This pollution was brought to an end by Team Sonic.

Description[]

GothicGardensWorldMap

Gothic Gardens' World Map, from Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice.

Full of gardens, Gothic Gardens is a clouded land of mountains with canyons, rivers and evergreen forests. Resting on local mountain pillars with narrow numerous rock bridges, forts, towers, and white and blue medieval castles. Surrounding these structures are eerie and dark, overgrown gardens/graveyards with giant vines sprouting roses, fences, topiaries, broken arches and tower-like dungeons.

The first two adventure levels are set in the spooky and foggy dark gardens. Here, brick walls covered in ivy serve as paths. Also, giant or overgrown trees, rose-sprouting colossal vines, and almost obscured castles appear in the background. Along the paths are lampposts, tombstones, colorful pots, knightly helmets, colored spears, metal fences and gazebos, loops with gothic symbols, and metal cages. The walls are also decorated with metal gates and gargoyles. There also spike spite pits with purple thorns.

The last two adventure levels are set in a more serene setting with the local white castles in the background. Like before, ivy-covered brick walls serve as paths. Along them are red medieval banners with symbols, broken and detailed golden arches, colored spears, battlements, knight helmets, pots, sword-embedded anvils and loops with spinning golden symbols. In addition, the island's clouded sky, mountainous landscape and castles are visible in the background, along with gothic towers with spires.

Story[]

While mining Ragnium on Ragna Rock, Eggman would pipe the messy by-products from his operation off to Gothic Gardens This lead to the creation of fissures emitting Fire and Ice energies, which would mess up the island's environment.

During their hunt for D-Fekt to determine the source of the fissures, Team Sonic arrived in Gothic Gardens where they finally caught the robot. While Sticks reluctantly held D-Fekt in place, Tails got a sample from him that confirmed his theory that D-Fekt had been in contact with the Ragnium Eggman was using for his EggBot Racers. No sooner however, the group discovered that Sticks had let D-Fekt go.

Planning to follow D-Fekt to the source of the Ragnium, Team Sonic located the robot again and had Sticks, the only one among them whom D-Fekt remotely liked, put a tracker on him (by convincing him that it was a friendship bracelet) which the team used to follow him to Ragna Rock.

Gameplay[]

Gothic Gardens' adventure levels, like the others, are divided into two parts (the foreground and background) that run parallel to each other, which can be traveled between with the Bounce Pad. These levels, however, offer more path options than most others. Other than the Bounce Pads, standard gimmicks here include Boost Pads, Enerbeam Swings, Rails, and disappearing platforms. There are also cannons for firing the playable character which can be fired with DSB and move around on their own. There are also moving block platforms, some with specific functions. Those with chains move around like swings (usually when touched) and those forming long platforms either rise up or collapse when neared or when the playable character comes in contact with them. Upward-tilting platforms serve as ramps from which to the playable characters can jump off of, while the ones that go down usually lead to sections with disappearing platforms. Additionally, there are cross-shaped platforms with spikes that rotate from time to time. Most noticeable though, are the blocks of ice/water that can be turned solid or intangible by touching them while using Fire/Ice Mode.

Hazardous obstacles in the adventure levels include stationary rollers with spikes, moving spiked blocks (some of which form traps), and spiked surfaces. Touching such obstacles will damage the player and return the characters to an earlier position. The adventure levels also have collectibles scattered about which unlock extra content if collected, breakable obstacles that give extra Rings, and Challenge Room entrances.

Like other adventure levels, Gothic Gardens' have several character-specific gimmicks for the playable characters. These include dash blocks for Sonic, laser blocks for Tails, pillars for Amy, and Boomerang Switches for Sticks. In addition, Gothic Gardens features three bonus levels, each with different gameplay mechanics.
