The Gravity Control Switch[1] (重力スイッチ[2] Jūryoku Suitchi?, lit. "Gravity Switch"), also formatted as gravity control switch,[3] is a gimmick that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a device that changes the direction of gravity.

Description[]

The Gravity Control Switch's design differ between game, though a common feature they share include a display showing arrows pointing in the direction of gravity. They are found in space-themed stages, including those exclusive to the Space Colony ARK.

In gameplay, the player can use the Gravity Control Switch to change the direction of gravity. When interacted with, the gravity in the Stage is flipped in the direction of the arrows displayed on the Gravity Control Switch, causing the player to immediately fall with the flow of gravity. This allows the player to walk on walls and roofs where necessary paths are found, or even control the direction of their descend through midair. Using the Gravity Control Switch also affects other objects in the room, allowing for easier navigation.

In Sonic Advance 2, the Gravity Control Switch is referred to as the anti-gravity machine.[4] In this game, they share the same appearance from Sonic Adventure 2 and are placed upwards or backwards on the ceilings in Egg Utopia. When passing through one, it changes the playable character's gravity. Sometimes, in order to walk on the ceilings, the player has to just touch Gravity Control Switches on ceilings from the ground to reverse gravity.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Gravity Control Switch is referred to as simply the gravity switch[5] (グラビティスイッチ[6] Gurabiti Suitchi?) and resemble thick, green tubes with pointy ends and yellow arrows running down it. In this game, they only appear in Space Gadget and can be triggered when touched. However, there are some equipped with a green ring that helps the player activates them without touching the switch itself.
