The Happyland Amusement Park[3], also known as Carnival Night[1] or Carnival Zone[2], is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is an abandoned[1] theme park on Angel Island formerly run by Renfield T. Rodent.[3]

Description[]

The Happyland Amusement Park is a futuristic amusement park located on the outskirts of Angel Island.[1] Its main entryway is a large white gate with a gray sphere above it reading "welcome" in red letters. The actual park is mainly composed of an open area connected to all the park's attractions, including refreshment stands, carnival games, a rollercoaster, a ferris wheel, a carousel, and the Hall of Mirrors.[3]

In addition, the park features several large skyscraper-like buildings, one of which serves as a control center for the park, with monitors keeping track of the other areas.[3]

History[]

Past[]

The Happyland Amusement Park was erected on Angel Island (known as "The Floating Island" back then) overnight by Dr. Robotnik[4], who had spent months planning for its usage in Operation: Castaways.[5] Robotnik had his secret underling Renfield the Rodent pretend to be in charge of the park, while he ran it from behind the scenes, sending out invitations to Knuckles and many of the other Freedom Fighters on Mobius.[3]

Operation: Castaways[]

Their curiosities getting the better of them, all of the Freedom Fighters invited answered the invitations, and arrived at the Happyland Amusement Park, where they were greeted by Renfield and gradually directed to the Hall of Mirrors. Once the Freedom Fighters were inside the Hall of Mirrors, Robotnik activated the building's hidden devices, trapping almost all the Freedom Fighters in another dimension of reality seen through the mirrors. The only Freedom Fighter spared from this was Knuckles, whom the doctor allowed to leave the hall for his own mocking enjoyment. However, Robotnik also predicted Knuckles would try to save his friends, and in response had the hall release special energies which shortened the echidna's dreadlocks and removed his spiked knuckles, leaving Knuckles unable to use his abilities.[3]

Unsure of what to do, Knuckles fled the Happyland Amusement Park, finding help in the form of island locals Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, Charmy Bee, and Mighty the Armadillo, plus Heavy and Bomb, two rogue Badniks. The group of seven then returned to the Happyland Amusement Park, and split up to reactivate several of the park's rides at once, hoping to distract Robotnik while they made their way to the Hall of Mirrors.[3]

Inferring that Knuckles had allies, Robotnik summoned Metal Sonic from Robotropolis, and deployed him against the group, to no avail. In a last-ditch effort, Robotnik added a Power Gem to Metal Sonic's matrix, transforming him into Titan Metal Sonic. In response, Knuckles used a Power Gem given by Heavy to become giant himself, pushing the colossal robot backwards into the Hall of Mirrors, destroying both. With the Freedom Fighters released, Robotnik fled, leaving Renfield behind to be captured.[3]

The Chaotix Caper[]

Months later, the Happyland Amusement Park would be re-opened by Renfield, who had apparently been released for an unknown reason, and no longer worked for Robotnik. Renfield advertised the park as "under new management", and hired a variety of mobians to maintain it. In order to drive sales, Renfield also had the park sell Chili dogs containing sauce laced with the Lemon Sundrop Dandelion drug. The park's re-opening attracted the attention of Charmy Bee and his friend Mello, the latter of whom unknowingly consumed one of the drug-laced chili dogs, and died shortly afterwards. This prompted Constable Remington to have the available Chaotix members (Charmy, Espio, Vector, Mighty, and Julie-Su) investigate the park, only for all of them except Julie-Su to partake in the drugged chili dogs and become hospitalized.[6]

At the same time, Downtown Ebony Hare forcefully took control of Renfield's business (and by extension the Happyland Amusement Park), believing the rodent was "killing the market" for Lemon Sundrop Dandelion by putting too much of it on each chili dog. As a result, the park cut the amount of sauce used on the chili dogs significantly. Although Julie-Su and Remington searched the park for any traces of the substance, they found none, and opted for a more direct approach, confronting Downtown.[7] Following the arrest of Downtown and his minions, all the drug-laced sauce in the Happyland Amusement Park was confiscated by the Echidna Security Team, much to the dismay of Renfield, who exclaimed sales would plummet as a result.[8]

Abandonment[]

An unknown amount of time later, Renfield would be arrested again for an unknown reason.[9] With nobody left to run it, the Happyland Amusement Park gradually became empty, and fell into abandonment.[1]
