— Description, Sonic Mania manual[1]

The Heavy Shinobi[1] (ヘビーシノビ[2] Hebī Shinobi?) is an antagonist that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. A member of the Hard Boiled Heavies, the Heavy Shinobi is the enhanced version of an Eggrobo created by Dr. Eggman after being struck with the power of the Phantom Ruby.

Appearance[]

Originally an Eggrobo, the Heavy Shinobi received a makeover when he stumbled upon the Phantom Ruby. Decorated as a ninja, the Heavy Shinobi's design reflects that of a green haori with a yellow-triangular cross-pattern chest piece. This yellow cross pattern also appears on his hand and feet cuffs. He has a black bottom torso, red eyes, gray appendages, and green zōri-like forefeet. He also possesses a dark green scarf, keeping with the ninja aesthetic.

The Heavy Shinobi was originally an elite Eggrobo who handled the most extreme tasks for his creator, Dr. Eggman.[3] After detecting a mysterious energy source on Angel Island, Eggman sent the Heavy Shinobi and the other Hard Boiled Heavies to investigate.[4] Upon reaching Angel Island, he and his troop excavated the energy source, the Phantom Ruby, just as Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower arrived. The Phantom Ruby promptly warped space-time around them,[4] transforming the Heavy Shinobi into his ninja attire along with his troop. As a side effect of the ruby, the Heavy Shinobi and his team gained free wills and personalities of their own, though they were driven mad in the process.[1]

Hard Boiled Heavies Green Hill Act 2

Eggman attempting to command the Heavy Shinobi and the Hard Boiled Heavies.

The Phantom Ruby transported the Hard Boiled Heavies, along with Sonic, Tails, and a nearby Knuckles the Echidna, to the Green Hill Zone, where the troop fled with the gemstone. After that, the Hard Boiled Heavies planned to keep the Phantom Ruby for themselves. The Heavy Shinobi and his troop soon met Eggman again though, who tried to command the group. When they would not listen though, Eggman snatched the Phantom Ruby from their clutches. The Heavy Shinobi and his troop then fled the scene.

The Heavy Shinobi would be the second Hard Boiled Heavy to fight against Sonic and co. Encountering them in Press Garden Zone, the Heavy Shinobi fought the heroes, only to be defeated, thus forcing him to retreat.

The Heavy Shinobi, now modified into the Phantom Shinobi, would later reappear to fight Sonic and co. again during their battle with the Phantom Egg, but was unable to beat them.

Sonic Mania Plus[]

FamitsuEvidence

The Heavy Magician giving the Phantom Ruby to the remains of the Hard Boiled Heavies.

In Sonic Mania Plus, the Phantom Shinobi had been destroyed after the events in the Titanic Monarch Zone, his remains having been left on Angel Island with most of the other Phantom Heavies. However, after Sonic's return with the Phantom Ruby following the War to Take Back the Planet, the Heavy Magician was able to steal the Phantom Ruby and give it to the Phantom King, who used it to revive himself and the rest of the Hard Boiled Heavies, including the Phantom Shinobi, just as Sonic and his companion caught up to them. The group's resurrection reverted the Phantom Shinobi back to the Heavy Shinobi, while also triggering a warp that sent them all to Green Hill Zone. There, the Heavy Gunner and the Hard Boiled Heavies fled with the Phantom Ruby in hand. When they regrouped, the group thought they could keep the Phantom Ruby to themselves. However, Eggman showed up again and took the ruby when they would not obey him, leaving the Heavy Shinobi and his troop to flee the scene.

When Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, and Ray reached the end of Press Garden Zone, the Heavy Shinobi attacked the group in the same manner as before, but ended up being defeated, and retreated. When the heroic group later fought the Phantom Egg, the Heavy Shinobi, now re-upgraded into the Phantom Shinobi once more, fought Sonic and co. when his turn came, but was unable to defeat the heroes.

Personality[]

The Heavy Shinobi is said to have gotten a couple of screws loose after receiving newfound power from the Phantom Ruby.[1] Despite this, he, being the ninja of his troop, is elegant and elusive, only striking at the most opportune time. Like the other Hard Boiled Heavies, he wishes to do harm to Sonic and his friends whether it be by orders from Eggman or by his own chaotic nature.

Powers and abilities[]

The Heavy Shinobi can jump great heights and distances, and is agile enough to perform somersaults. He can also balance his entire weight with one foot, like an actual ninja.

Weapons[]

Most of the Heavy Shinobi's strengths come from his weapons. He wields an infinite number of Asterons as shurikens and possesses a sword that can instantly freeze whatever its blade touches.

Through unknown means, the Heavy Shinobi can assume a more powerful state called the Phantom Shinobi. In this form, he resembles a shuriken star, with his limbs having been replaced with extendable blades. In terms of abilities, the Phantom Shinobi can fly, which makes it easier for him to move around. He can also rotate his blades and extend them over a certain distance to increase the range of his attacks.

Battle[]

The Heavy Shinobi is the boss of Press Garden Zone Act 2 and serves as the tenth boss overall in Sonic Mania and Sonic Mania Plus. He is fought at the end of Press Garden Zone Act 2.

In Sonic Mania, the Heavy Shinobi is fought with Sonic, Tails or Knuckles. In Sonic Mania Plus, he is fought with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty or Ray.

Boss guide[]

Once the player arrives into a closed off arena, the Heavy Shinobi will appear in the middle of the arena. He will then proceed to jump around the arena while throwing Asterons from midair like shurikens. These Asterons will hurt the player if they come in contact with them. If avoided, they will stick to the surface they hit instead. Any stuck Asteron can afterward be destroyed like any regular Badnik; take more than five seconds to do it however, and the Asterons will self-detonate, causing them to release spikes in five directions that can damage the player as well. It should be noted that the more damage the Heavy Shinobi takes, the more Asterons he will throw, with three being his maximum.

To damage the Heavy Shinobi, one must not attack him immediately: patience is key. The player must avoid confronting the Heavy Shinobi head-on while it is at the ground, as he will instantly strike the player with his sword, which will instantly freeze the playable character, when they get close. Wait until the Heavy Shinobi jumps into a Spin Jump-like arc. Upon hitting him in midair, he will fall to the floor and become stunned for a few seconds. In this state, the player is able to damage him.

Hit the Heavy Shinobi eight times and he will be defeated, upon which he will jump out of the arena and escape. The player can then proceed to the Capsule and finish the Zone.

Heavy Shinobi, from Sonic the Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Special.

In honor of Dr. Eggman's birthday, Heavy Shinobi, along with several other Badniks, launched an attack against Sonic the Hedgehog, only to be called off by Dr. Eggman himself, who ordered Heavy Shinobi and the other Badniks to return to his base. There, he lectured them about how they were unprepared to fight Sonic. Despite Heavy Shinobi feeling ashamed for his involvement in the attempted assault, he and the other Badniks still wished Dr. Eggman a happy birthday when the cake was brought out.[5]
