Hero Chao[1] (ヒーローチャオ[2] Hīrōchao?) are creatures that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a type of Chao.

Description[]

Anatomy[]

Hero Chao are small creatures with pudding-like bodies. In general, Hero Chao have round, waterdrop-like heads with large eyes but no noses, round torsos smaller than their heads, smooth feet with no legs, and arms with no visible hands. Neither their arms or feet have digits. They also have a short tail, small wings, and a floating mood indicator above their heads.

While Hero Chao can have various looks and features, they all have white eyes with black sclera, their wings resemble angel wings with yellow tips, the point of their heads is shaped like two tuffs, and the mood indicator above their heads is blue and shaped like a halo. The most basic form of a Hero Chao have white skin with dark blue and sky blue tips on their hands and feet. They also have a pale yellow oval color in their bellies' center. The two tuffs at the point of their heads have blue tips. Lastly, they possess (usually) small, but genuine, smiles and small round tails.

Characteristics and culture[]

The Hero Chao are Chao children on the Hero side who are warm, kind, and polite.[1]

In terms of biology, all Hero Chao are by default genderless.[3][4]

Hero Chao can usually only speak one word which is their own species' name. However, they have a very distinct form of communication: their emotion-dot. This dot floats above a Hero Chao's head and will change shape depending on what they think or feel: It becomes a heart when the Hero Chao is happy, a question mark when the Hero Chao is confused, an exclamation point when the Hero Chao is alarmed, and a swirl when the Hero Chao is unhappy.

Powers and abilities[]

As Chao, Hero Chao can absorb and learn skills and traits from other life-forms, adapting their shapes as they do. Like all Chao, they are also capable of flight.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Adventure 2[]

The Hero Chao made their first appearance in Sonic Adventure 2, and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, as a form that the player can raise a Chao towards. When doing so for the first time, the Hero Garden is unlocked. In these games, one can evolve a Chao into a Hero Chao by: feeding it Hero Fruit, caring it with Sonic, Tails and/or Knuckles, abusing it with Shadow, Rouge and/or Dr. Eggman, or leaving it in the Hero Garden. A child Chao that is about to evolve into a Hero Chao will have its visual traits. Once they undergo their first evolution, the Chao will become a Hero Chao.

One can evolve a Hero Chao into a type of Chaos Chao called an "Angel Chao". To get this kind of Chao, a Chao must be a Hero Chao that has already gone through at least two reincarnations. Once the Chao is on its third life (or later), they will have to receive at least one of all the small Animals before the Chao has evolved to the second stage of its third life. They will then evolve into an Angel Chao.
