For the move in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric/Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, see Hover (Sonic Boom). Not to be confused with Green Hover.

Hover (ホバーリング Hobāringu?, lit. Hovering) is a move used by E-102 Gamma, Miles "Tails" Prower, Dr. Eggman, and E-123 Omega. The move allows the user to hover above the ground while slowly descending.

Description

Hover was first used by Gamma in Sonic Adventure after the Jet Booster is equipped. With it, the player can hover by pressing and holding the jump button whilst in the air. The move was then used by Tails and Dr. Eggman in Sonic Adventure 2 after the player has equipped the Booster and the Jet Engine respectively. It was later used by Omega in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) which functions in a similar manner, though using boosters built into his back, rather than a separate Jet Booster, unlike other iterations of the ability, Omega is able to use the move without first finding an Level Up Item.

When performing the move, the character uses Jet Boosters to slow their descent. The move can be used to traverse large gaps and bottomless pits. The move can used multiple times as long the player is in the air, allowing the player to help regulate descent if needed.

Variants

Burst Hover

Main article: Burst Hover

The Burst Hover is a move exclusive to Blaze the Cat. The move performs the same way as the Hover does; however, the Burst Hover can only be used for about five seconds each time the player is in the air, after which the player will fall helplessly.

Trivia

  • In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the Hover briefly holds the player in the same position before descent. Players can exploit this by repeatedly pressing the jump button to freely move around the level in the air without descending. This move can be used to break the game and explore new places.
  • In Sonic Adventure, all of the E-Series robots fought by Gamma (excluding E-105 Zeta) use a different version of Hover, in which they briefly fly as opposed to hovering.
  • In Sonic Heroes, when Team Dark perform their Triangle Dive, Omega appears to be using his hover abilities to assist in the Triangle Dive.
