— Howard Watcher, "Sonic's Big Break"

Howard Watcher is a character that appears in the Sonic X anime series and its comic series published by Archie Comics. He was the chief watcher of Prison Island, tasked with the vigilance of Sonic the Hedgehog's cell when he was arrested, but after Amy Rose broke him out of his prison, Watcher lost his credibility and was fired from his position. This caused him to join the S.O.N.I.C.X. organization, in order to get his revenge on Sonic and his friends for making him lose his job.

History[]

Anime[]

Howard Watcher profile

Howard Watcher, from "Sonic's Big Break".

Watcher is charged with watching over Sonic's cell, and after Amy manages to reach him to get him out (only to figure out Sonic could escape by himself), Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat are detected invading the prison as well. Watcher sends improved G.U.N. robots after each, but Sonic and Amy leave the building while Rouge destroys a robot in the security area, which initiates a detonation sequence around the island. Watcher, along with the other officials present at the time, evacuated the island in helicopters before it explodes.[1]

Archie Comics[]

Watcher first appeared in the comics as a S.O.N.I.C.X. member. They captured Sonic and brought him to their base on the abandoned Prison Island. They all introduced themselves, shared their stories of how he "ruined" them and told him that they were united by the Organizer. Sonic broke into laughter at the group's name, believing it sounded like the name of a fan club. He swiftly broke out of the base with little effort, despite them sending their robots and Li Yan's gang after them. They then told the Organizer of how their first mission was a failure, but he assured them that next time will go much better for them.[2] Watcher and the other members shoot a final Sonic clone created by Dr. Narasu to attack the original Sonic, mistaking it for Sonic himself.[3] Watcher, along with the other members, appears in following issues, but is never seen doing anything important for the plot aside from a few commentaries, being one of the few members to do so.

Personality[]

As a prison warden, Watcher was cruel and merciless. He was a dedicated individual as he had a perfect record of not allowing any prisoners to escape under his supervision. He smugly gloated about it being impossible for Sonic to escape and bragged to him that before he met him, no one had ever escaped from Prison Island under his watch. He is somewhat delusional, as he talked to Sonic while he watched him through a camera, even though he knew he could not hear him. Watcher was very loud and over-the-top when doing his job. He is also bloodthirsty, as he orders his robots to destroy Tails and Amy when they come to help Sonic escape, and he stated that his motto was "Take no prisoners". Watcher is, much like the other members of the S.O.N.I.C.X, arrogant and proud of his profession, and after the loss of his job hurt his pride, he became obsessed with destroying Sonic out of revenge. Like most members of S.O.N.I.C.X, Watcher believes that he is a good guy and Sonic is a menace.

Powers and abilities[]

Watcher possesses some skills with machinery, specializing in creating traps, such as a force-field generator and several claw-handed robot arms.[2]

Weapons[]

After joining S.O.N.I.C.X., Watcher was given a laser pistol.

Trivia[]

  • The surname "Watcher" is an obvious reference to his job.
  • Watcher is one of the members of S.O.N.I.C.X. to almost have no role on the overall plot of the comics, despite claiming he wants to destroy Sonic.
