The Jellygnite,[1][2] also known as the Jellies,[3] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, jellyfish-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance[]

Jellygnites are based on jellyfish; their main body is a metallic cap with a pair of eyes and three tentacles sprouting from their bottom. Each tentacle consists of four ball segments. In Sonic Mania they have blue and orange on their bodies instead of green.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]

In the 2013 remaster of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Jellygnites appear as enemies. In this game, they are only found floating around in the underwater sections of Hidden Palace Zone.

Similar to the Grabbers, the Jellygnites have more realistic movements. If a character gets caught in their long arms, it will electrify them and blow themselves up a short while afterward (without releasing an Animal) to damage the player. Like the Grabbers, the player can escape the Jellygnites' grasp by tapping left and right repeatedly. To destroy a Jellygnite, the player has to hit it from above to avoid being grabbed. Upon being destroyed by the player, the Jellygnite will release their Animal and award the player with 100 points.

Sonic Mania[]

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, Jellygnites are enemies found in Hydrocity Zone Act 1. In gameplay, they are found in the underwater sections of the Act, swimming up and down. Like in their previous appearance, they can catch the playable character if they approach. After doing so, they will self-destruct to damage the character without releasing the Animal inside of them. However, Jellygnites can easily be destroyed by hitting their heads with a Spin Jump, doing so will release the Animal inside of them and award the player with 100 points.

Powers and abilities[]

The Jellygnites have the ability to swim. When they manage to catch their prey in their tentacles, they are able to self-destruct to inflict damage to their captive.

Trivia[]

  • Being the only new Badnik to be featured in the 2013 remaster of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Jellygnites do not appear in any known prototype versions of the game and were likely an original concept for the Zone's official re-creation.[4]
  • Jellygnite's name may be a pun on "jellyfish" and "gelignite", a type of gelatin-like explosive.
    • Its other name, Jellies, is simply an abbreviation of the word "jellyfish".
