Kabasiras are small, rather creepy-looking insect-based Badniks. They have a round, grey body with small wings, black eyes and red nose. While flying, they create a trail consisting of a few after-images which follow their movement.
Game appearances
Sonic the Hedgehog CD
In Sonic the Hedgehog CD, the Kabasiras are only found at Stardust Speedway. In gameplay, Kabasiras normally fly up and down in one place. When the player approaches, it will fire an afterimage in the playable character's direction. While their afterimage can damage the player, it can be intercepted the mid-air with the Spin Jump without causing the player damage.
In the Bad Future or sometimes in the present timeline of the Rounds, Kabasiras are one of the few Badniks who do not show decay, thus remaining pristine in appearance. However, these Kabasiras are slower but do not fire their afterimages. These Badniks can easily be defeated with a simple Spin Jump. Like every Badnik in the game, they are powered by Little Planet flower seeds which will pop out of them after being defeated.
Sonic Mania
In Sonic Mania, the Kabasiras reappeared as enemies. In terms of design, they remain unchanged from their debut appearance. In this game, they appear in Stardust Speedway Zone Act 1 and 2.
In gameplay, the Kabasiras' attack pattern is identical to the one they had in Sonic the Hedgehog CD: they fly around in the air and throw their afterimages at the characters when they get in range. Also, when destroying a Kabasira, it will release an Animal.
Powers and abilities
Kabasiras are capable of flight and can produce physical duplicates of themselves which they can use as projectiles.
Trivia
"Kabasira" is the Japanese word(s) for "Mosquito Column" or "Swarm".
Notes
↑While not listed in any instruction manuals, the in-game source code in 1996 PC release of Sonic the Hedgehog CD refers to this Badnik as "kabasira".
