A jumping spider that spits immobilizing webs

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Kumo-Kumo[1] (クモクモ[2] Kumokumo?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, spider-based Badnik model created by Dr. Robotnik.

Appearance[]

As spider-based Badniks, Kumo-Kumos have a dark blue and round torso each with black underbellies and six long legs with spring attachments each at their flat feet. The Kumo-Kumos' heads consist of a protruding black face each with a violet forehead covering, a pair of cartoonish black eyes and yellow mandibles. On the Kumo-Kumos' rears are also a small cannon to shoot webs from.

Overview[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Kumo-Kumos appear as enemies in Quartz Quadrant. In gameplay, they either appear individually or in pairs in idle positions, although they can still rotate themselves so that their abdomen is pointing towards the playable character. When the playable character gets close to them, the Kumo-Kumos will not move along the ground. Instead, they will leap high into the air. As they leap, they will fire a cobweb-like mass of sticky gunk onto the ground. This gunk cannot hurt the playable character. However, it will wrap itself around the playable character upon touch and will practically immobilizes them for a few seconds, restricting their movements to only a very slow walk and jumps. After a few seconds though, the gunk will disappear. After that, the Kumo-Kumos will only fire their gunk again if they turn around again in order to track the playable character's position. Regardless, the Kumo-Kumos can be destroyed with a Spin Attack.

In the Bad Future or sometimes in the Present timeframe of the Rounds, Kumo-Kumos show signs of wear; their bodies have developed several cracks and they lack rear cannons. These types of Kumo-Kumos do not leap as high and cannot shoot webs, and are otherwise destroyed in the same manner as their prestine versions. Also, like every Badnik in the game, the Kumo-Kumos are powered by Little Planet flower seeds which will pop out of them after they are defeated.

Powers and abilities[]

The Kumo-Kumos are equipped with springs that allow them to make high leaps. They can also produce a spider web-like substance that they can fire at their opponents to immobilize them.

Trivia[]

  • "Kumo" is Japanese for "spider". which basically means in english "spider-spider"
