Layla (ライラ Raira?) is a human resident of Shamar who appears in Sonic Unleashed. She is an attractive and diligent exchange student, who has come to Shamar to research the local ruins and to study under Professor Pickle's instructions. She is described as being rather clumsy, although many of her suitors seems to like this trait of hers.

A confident and fetching university student with an exotic flair. She is currently researching the ruins. Layla always dots her i's and crosses her t's, but the truth is, she is very much a clumsy oaf. And yet (oddly enough) many of her suitors cite this as a plus.

At some point prior to when Sonic the Hedgehog and Chip arrived in Shamar for the first time, Layla became an exchange student from an unspecified location to a local university in Shamar, with the purpose of traveling to Shamar to study under Professor Pickle's instructions and to study the local ruins. As such, Layla came to work closely together with the professor, becoming somewhat of his local assistant in Shamar. When Sonic and Chip later arrived in Shamar, Layla was the first to greet the traveling duo once they found Professor Pickle's laboratory and let them inside.
Layla would from then on remain as Sonic's and Chip's outside connection to Professor Pickle, telling them where Professor Pickle had figured they should go next and when he wanted to see them, while she encouraging them to seek out his advice. She would also often mention that the professor looked forward to see what souvenirs Sonic and Chip had brought him, but explained to them that was not like that Professor Pickle only received and never gave.
When Sonic and Chip prepared to go to Eggmanland, Layla told Sonic and Chip that she would be rooting for them and mentioned that the townspeople did not know how close the planet was to oblivion. Layla then told Sonic and Chip that they were their only hope left and told them to give it their best shot.
Layla later watched on in horror with the rest of Shamar, as Dark Gaia began to cast the world into darkness, but later rejoiced, with her high-fiving Shadi, when the world returned to normal following Perfect Dark Gaia's defeat at the hands of Super Sonic and the Gaia Colossus.

At some point prior to when Sonic the Hedgehog and Chip arrived in Shamar for the first time, Layla became an exchange student from an unspecified location to Shamar University where she studied. At some point, she obtained the Sun Tablet to Shamar's Sacred Shrine under mysterious reasons.
When Sonic and Chip first arrived in Shamar, Layla was complaining about Shamar's heat when she met the traveling duo. After greeting Sonic and Chip and introducing herself, she heard that they were looking for Professor Pickle's laboratory. Having just seen Professor Pickle's Assistant, Layla told Sonic and Chip where they could him as she was sure he would know where the laboratory was.
Later, after Sonic and Chip had met up with Professor Pickle, Layla met up with the two of them again. After hearing that they had found Professor Pickle, Layla revealed that she had been waiting for them to come back the whole time. Layla then gave Sonic and Chip the Sun Tablet and told them to get the Chaos Emerald to the Gaia Temple. As Sonic and Chip asked her how she got her hands on the Sun Tablet, Layla teasingly told them that many strange forces had been at work recently. After Sonic and Chip had passed through the door, Layla congratulated them on this feat, but also said that they still had a long way to go and wished them good luck
When Layla later met up with Sonic and Chip again, she told them that she believed that fate had brought them to Shamar and that it was fate that had them run into each other. She then gave Sonic and Chip Soundtrack 43, as she thought it would come in handy.
As Sonic and Chip neared the end of their adventure, Layla told Sonic that she just knew he would be able to save the planet, and told him that she believed in him.'
