Sparkling golden shoes. They're made with the same material as Rings.

— Description, Sonic Unleashed (Xbox 360/PlayStation 3)

The Light Speed Shoes (ライトシューズ[1] Raito Shūzu?, lit. "Light Shoes"), also known as the Light Speed Dash Shoes (ライトスピードシューズ Raito Supīdo Shūzu?, lit. "Light Speed Shoes"), are a Level Up Item available to Sonic the Hedgehog in various video games of the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Description[]

The Light Speed Shoes' appearance differ greatly between the games, but share the trait of being based on Sonic's footwear.

In Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure: DX, the Light Speed Shoes look like Sonic's shoes, but are adorned with circular attachments on the sides of the heels. At the bottom of these shoes, Sonic's name can be seen, albeit written backwards on his right sole. In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Light Speed Shoes are attachments to the heels on the Grind Shoes. In Sonic Unleashed, however, they are a golden version of Sonic's shoes and are described as being made of the same material as Rings. In each of these games, they allow Sonic to perform the Light Speed Dash and travel along trails of Rings.

Locations[]

Sonic Adventure[]

Light Speed Shoes

The Light Speed Shoes design from Sonic Adventure

In Sonic Adventure, the Light Speed Shoes are found in the sewers in Station Square after defeating the Egg Hornet boss. To obtain them, the player should head down the manhole at the road in the City Hall area. Once down there, they must head to the end of the sewer, and the Light Speed Shoes will be on the platform to the right. In this game, they are described to make the user feel lighter than the air.[2]

Sonic Shuffle[]

In Sonic Shuffle, normal Sonic wears his regular trademark shoes, but Super Sonic wears the Light Speed Shoes from Sonic Adventure. The shoes allow Super Sonic to perform the Light Speed Dash, an improvement on Sonic's Spin Dash. Sonic can perform a Spindash on the board and move twice the spaces of the original card if it was selected twice in a row (if the player chooses a 6, then on the next turn another 6, they will move 12 spaces instead, if the player picked two 5's then they will move 10 and so on), but this only works once and resets. The next time the player picks the same card again they will move the normal number of spaces. Super Sonic improves this by moving double the spaces for a third and fourth turn if the player is lucky enough to get all the cards in a row.

This variation of the Light Speed Dash is different as Sonic does not use rings to move, he instead dashes without them.

Sonic Adventure 2[]

In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Light Speed Shoes are found in Metal Harbor. After the first Star Post, the player must get over to the next platform. The Light Shoes can be found on the top of the tower on that platform, which can be reached with the pulley.

Sonic Unleashed[]

In Sonic Unleashed, the Light Speed Shoes can be found in Shamar's Entrance Stage, on a cliff to the left after Sonic enters the Entrance Gate and is a requirement to reach the next Day Stage. In order to obtain this Level Up Item, Sonic must have obtained either the Wall Jump Shoes and/or the Air Boost Shoes.

It is only found in the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version since Sonic already has all Level Up Items at the start of the game in the Wii/PlayStation 2 version.

Other game appearances[]

Sonic Speed Simulator[]

In Sonic Speed Simulator, the Light Speed Shoes appear in their Sonic Adventure design as items worn by Adventure Sonic & Summer Sonic However in this game, the shoes are entirely cosmetic, and have no effect on gameplay.

Trivia[]

  • Though the Light Speed Shoes are treated as non-optional Level Up Items in the Sonic Adventure series, there are several ways to bypass their laid-out usage in gameplay.
    • In Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure DX, the Light Speed Shoes, are non-optional and the player cannot progress to the next level, Casinopolis, without them. Sonic can get out of the sewer without them by spindashing and jumping at the step with correct timing, causing him to jump very high out of the circular dome and return to Station Square. He cannot reach the button that opens the Casinopolis door, however, so he must go back to collect the Shoes in order to move forward.
    • In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Light Speed Shoes, though non-optional, are only required to complete Crazy Gadget. They can be skipped up until that point if Sonic were to jump onto the boxes surrounding the pulley in Metal Harbor after it has pulled him up. He can then jump up onto the roof of the structure where the pulley is located. Going to the edge closest to the Shoes, charging up a spindash and letting go will send Sonic forward at high speeds, and performing a well-timed jump at the other edge will send Sonic up in the air fast enough to reach the barge that would normally be inaccessible without the Light Speed Shoes. There is another line of rings at the end of this barge normally used to travel to the next section, but jumping down reveals a platform with a rocket allowing Sonic to get across.
  • In the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure, the Light Speed Shoes are slightly farther ahead in the corridor they are placed in. However in Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, they are moved backward.
  • The Light Speed Shoes are the most reoccurring Level Up Item in the series, appearing in a total of three games.
