— Lightmare, Sonic the Comic #86

Lightmare[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions. She is Lord Sidewinder's most loyal minion, as well as his daughter, and thus an enemy of the Chaotix Crew. She resides in New Tek City in the Special Zone.

Appearance[]

STC98-LightmareUnmasked

Lightmare reveals herself as Sidewinder's daughter, from Sonic the Comic #98.

Lightmare wears blue body-coverings, heavy white robes and a golden mask. This outfit makes most people (including Chaotix) believe that Lightmare is male. Beneath the mask, she has dark pink skin, green eyes and long blonde hair, as well as an upturned nose and pointed ears.[2] The only part of her body usually exposed is a pink, worm-like tail. Lightmare wears several gold rings and a gold chain around her neck with a crescent symbol on it.

History[]

Past[]

At some point in the past, when Lightmare's father, Lord Sidewinder, formed a gang of henchmen to aid him in his plans for world domination, Lightmare joined his gang out of loyalty to her father, and would be made his second-in-command. However, the Chaotix would often interfere in their plans.[3]

Heroes & Villains[]

When the genocidal demon, Super Sonic, was separated from Sonic the Hedgehog by means of a Star Post, Super Sonic ended up in the Special Zone. He encountered Lord Sidewinder and proposed a deal: if Sidewinder delivered Sonic to Super Sonic, then Super Sonic would join Sidewinder's gang and help him conquer Planet Meridian. Lightmare warned her father that he could not trust a demon like Super Sonic, but Sidewinder ignored her advice and accepted the proposal. When Sonic was arrested by the New Tek City police department after being caught associating with the Chaotix, Sidewinder visited the police station to pay his bail and brought Sonic back to his family mansion, where he introduced him to Lightmare and his other minions, before introducing Super Sonic and telling Sonic about their deal. However, Super Sonic reneged on his end of the deal and destroyed Sidewinder's estate, protecting Lightmare and everyone else inside the mansion with force-fields so that he could enjoy killing them one at a time.[1] Following Super Sonic's treachery, the Chaotix arrived through the Omni-Viewer, leading Sidewinder to order his henchmen to destroy them once and for all. Lightmare fought Charmy Bee and attacked him with an illusion of his worst nightmare: a giant hand holding a giant can of bug spray. Meanwhile, Sonic battled Super Sonic and trapped him inside the Omni-Viewer, distracting the Chaotix long enough for Sidewinder's gang to escape.[3]

The Ultimate Nightmare[]

Lightmare later aided Lord Sidewinder in a plan to steal the Omni-Viewer, which still contained Super Sonic, from the Chaotix. After sneaking into the Chaotix's headquarters with the help of a shrink ray Sidewinder purchased from Nack the Weasel, Lightmare used her Box of Nightmares to incapacitate the Chaotix with illusions, though she did not hit Sonic with her spell as she did not notice his presence. Sonic then revealed himself and engaged in a short battle with Lightmare and Sidewinder's other minions, during which Bio-Hazard accidentally hit Sidewinder with his toxic waste, poisoning him. Lightmare then called off the attack and retreated with Bio-Hazard and Mr. Fry, taking the unconscious Sidewinder back to their hideout so they could give him the antidote for Bio-Hazard's toxic waste.[4]

Doomsday[]

After Lightmare cured Lord Sidewinder, he became increasingly obsessed with controlling Super Sonic and devised a secret plan to enslave him, leading Lightmare to fear for his sanity and believe that his plan would only get him and his gang killed. Refusing to abandon her father, she instead secretly went to Sonic and the Chaotix. At first, the heroes believed she came to fight them and attacked her. After a brief fight, she explained why she had come and warned them about Sidewinder's plan, hoping that they would thwart Sidewinder's scheme. She then returned to her father, lying to him that she had left to make "final preparations". She then left with Sidewinder and his other minions in a rocket.[2] Their rocket arrived on an asteroid near another asteroid Super Sonic was currently trapped in and was preparing to escape from. After their arrival, Sidewinder explained his plan to his minions: after Super Sonic escaped from the asteroid he was trapped in, Sidewinder would use the "power of his mind" to summon Super Sonic and control him. Seeing that he had gone insane and his plan would only get them all killed, Mr. Fry and Bio-Hazard turned on Sidewinder, though Lightmare remained loyal and told them they had to obey him. Before the villains could fight among themselves, Sonic and the Chaotix arrived and engaged Sidewinder's minions. During the fight, Mr. Fry accidentally punched Sidewinder and knocked him into Lightmare, knocking them both unconscious. Sonic and the Chaotix then defeated Mr. Fry and Bio-Hazard, and they were all later sent to prison.[5]

Hunter & The Hunted[]

Sometime later, Lightmare managed to escape from prison, along with Sidewinder and his other cronies, before returning to their hideout in New Tek City. There, Sidewinder used his technology to detect Super Sonic on Mobius, and used a dimensional teleporter to send Bio-Hazard to his location with orders to capture him and take him back to the Special Zone. He did this so that he could search for a way to steal his powers.[6] From there, Lightmare, Sidewinder, and Mr. Fry awaited Bio-Hazard's return as he pursued Super Sonic, who had lost his memories and no longer remembered that he had powers. Just when Bio-Hazard had Super Sonic cornered, Lieutenant Furor and the New Tek police burst into Sidewinder's hideout and arrested them all. Furor then deactivated the dimensional teleporter, causing Bio-Hazard to return to Sidewinder's hideout, and Lightmare was once again sent to prison along with Sidewinder and his other henchmen.[7][8]

Showdown[]

When Dr. Robotnik absorbed the power of the Chaos Emeralds and reshaped reality so that Sonic and the Chaotix never existed, he made Sidewinder ruler of the Special Zone, with Lightmare, Bio-Hazard, and Mr. Fry remaining his enforcers. Robotnik then sent Sonic to the Special Zone and took away his powers so that Lightmare and Sidewinder's other minions could easily destroy him. While Bio-Hazard and Mr. Fry beat Sonic up, Sidewinder whispered to Lightmare that after destroying Sonic, he planned to find a way to steal Robotnik's powers so that he could rule the universe himself. However, the omnipresent Robotnik overheard this, and in a fit of rage, he turned Lightmare, Sidewinder, and all of his minions to stone as a warning to anyone else who might think of betraying him.[9] When Robotnik was stripped of his powers and reality was returned to normal, Lightmare was presumably turned back to normal and returned to prison, just like Mr. Fry.[10]

Personality[]

Lightmare possesses a serious disposition. She is extremely loyal to her father, Lord Sidewinder. However, her loyalty leads her to commit immoral actions. Lightmare has more common sense than her father, warning him against making dangerous decisions, such as trusting Super Sonic. Despite her loyalty, she is willing to criticize Sidewinder when he makes foolish choices, as shown when she scolded him for trusting Super Sonic against her advice.[1] She is more concerned with Sidewinder's well-being than with executing his evil schemes, as shown when she called off a mission to capture Super Sonic in order to get Sidewinder an antidote for Bio-Hazard's toxic waste.[4] Lightmare remained loyal to him even after beginning to fear for his sanity when he became obsessed with usurping the powers of Super Sonic, although she secretly sought Chaotix's help to ensure his plan was not carried out (again, largely to prevent Sidewinder from being killed).[2]

Powers and abilities[]

Lightmare can fly and possesses the ability to teleport in a cloud of smoke.[3][2]

Weapons[]

Lightmare carries around a small, golden box with a keyhole called the Box of Nightmares, which also comes with a key. By unlocking and opening the box, Lightmare can conjure utterly convincing illusions, forcing people to confront their worst fear, or any other nightmare she can imagine. For example, she made Charmy hallucinate he was being attacked by a giant, floating hand with a giant can of bug spray,[3] made Sonic think he was blind, and made Mighty the Armadillo hallucinate that he was trapped in a cage.[2] These hallucinations last as long as the box is kept open.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Lightmare's pink tail was incorrectly coloured blue in Sonic the Comic #98, "Doomsday, Part 2".
