Lightning Lynx is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He was originally a member of the Fearsome Foursome under Mammoth Mogul, and has since become a member of the Destructix. A criminal who with his cohorts has fought with the Knothole Freedom Fighters and Chaotix several times, he has also worked under command of Sleuth Dawg and Dr. Finitevus.

History[]

Past[]

Originally the strongest and quickest warrior of the Raiju Clan, Lightning Lynx loved the clan's Bride, Conquering Storm, and in an effort to prove his worth, challenged her to a duel, which he lost miserably. For his failure, he was dishonored, and exiled from the clan. At some point, he was found by Mammoth Mogul, and became a member of the Fearsome Foursome.[1]

Member of the Fearsome Foursome[]

Espiovslightning

Lightning Lynx debuted as an agent of Mammoth Mogul's, attacking the Chaotix on his orders. After being defeated and retreating from this battle, he returned to assist Mogul in his bid to claim the Sword of Acorns by pitting the Chaotix and Freedom Fighters against each other. Lynx's purpose involved serving as the substance behind Mogul's illusions of Espio the Chameleon and Sally Acorn, which initially had the two groups fighting. When the more level-headed members of each team noticed the errors in these illusions, however, the scheme failed and Lynx was captured along with his teammates.[2][3]

Escape from the Devil's Gulag[]

Along with the rest of the Fearsome Foursome, Lightning Lynx was taken to Devil's Gulag and imprisoned for some time. However, due to the actions of an as yet concealed Dr. Eggman, the teammates were able to escape along with fellow criminals Snively Kintobor, Nack the Weasel, Sleuth Dog, Drago Wolf, Warlord Kodos, and Uma Arachnis. Joining the assemblage of villains under Snively's leadership, Lynx confronted the Freedom Fighters again by capturing Nate Morgan, a venture that proved much more successful than his previous encounters with the heroes. Sadly, their success was short-lived, as he and the rest of the future Destructix were defeated and captured by the Royal Secret Service under Geoffrey St. John.[4][5][6]

Member of the Destructix[]

Upon escaping from Devil's Gulag once again, Lightning Lynx and his teammates-which now included Sleuth Dog and Drago Wolf-took up residence in an old factory that was once in possession of Dr. Ivo Robotnik, keeping Tommy Turtle as a convenient punching bag. Later, Sonic the Hedgehog infiltrated this factory to liberate his old friend Tommy, only to watch as the Destructix-though they were not yet called that-attempted to make a deal with Dr. Eggman to sell him the factory, which by rights he already owned. Lynx and the others were subjected to Roboticization after that, becoming Robians in service to Eggman. Due to Sleuth's apparently suicidal attempt to prevent his own transformation, it seemed briefly as though the Destructix had been destroyed, but they in fact survived and were De-Roboticized by the Bem. Later, robotic doubles of their Robian forms attacked Sonic as part of a ruse to get an Auto Automaton of Tommy Turtle into Knothole. When recovered by Eggman, these doubles contained video of the real Destructix making a deal with "Anonymous", a mysterious being who would later turn out to be Eggman's computer virus son A.D.A.M..[7][8][9]

Once the Destructix were officially organized, they all set out to recapture Mammoth Mogul's Chaos Emerald in order to release him. Lightning Lynx engaged the Freedom Fighters and Chaotix in combat once again, but as usual was outclassed and outnumbered and so defeated. He and the others imprisoned, only to be liberated when Mogul escaped from the Emerald himself. Eventually, when Ixis Naugus arrived and challenged Mogul for the Crown of Acorns, Lynx fought against his Arachne Clan, as well as the arriving Freedom Fighters and Chaotix. When Mogul and Naugus joined forces, the battle continued between only two sides, but ended with the destruction of the Sword and Crown of Acorns and the capture of the villains by the Egg Fleet. Lynx and his compatriots were then teleported to the Egg Grape Chamber, where Mogul briefly protected them before lowering his shields and leaving them at Eggman's mercy. Luckily for the criminals, Dr. Finitevus arrived shortly thereafter with Scourge the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat to liberate the Destructix. Finitevus had called upon them for their muscle, first requiring Lynx and his teammates to act as reformed mercenaries by defending the helpless Echidnas of Angel Island from the Dingoes.[10][11][12][13][14]

Lightning Lynx and his compatriots revealed themselves soon enough by ambushing and capturing Knuckles the Echidna when he returned to Angel Island, and handed him over to the Dark Legion. Following his brainwashing and transformation into Enerjak, the Destructix-now joined by Fiona Fox in place of Rouge-were ordered to guard a device created by the Brotherhood of Guardians meant to destroy Enerjak in the event of his return. Soon, they were challenged by Sonic, Julie-Su, and Locke as they attempted to claim the device, only to be thwarted by Archimedes the Fire Ant and then have their mission rendered unnecessary by Sonic's destruction of the weapon. Unnerved by the ensuing battle between Enerjak and Super Sonic, Lightning Lynx and his allies exited the scene through one of Finitevus' Warp Rings, having decided to become full-fledged mercenaries.[15][16][17]

The group soon found themselves yet again employed by Mammoth Mogul, who commissioned them to bring him Sonic's running shoes (Even if his feet were still in them). After a brief fight with Sonic, Sally, and fellow mercenaries Bark the Polar Bear and Bean the Dynamite-whom Mogul had also hired but who had switched sides on Sally's offer of better payment-they captured Sonic by knocking him out and took him to Mogul's casino. The Destructix were all then defeated by Sonic, Sally, Amy Rose, and Geoffrey St. John, only for Rouge to pass the word to them that Mogul's plan all along had been to discredit Sonic by capturing him and then having him confront Mogul without evidence that Mogul had been involved.[18][19]

Iron Dominion[]

Lightning Lynx next appeared in New Mobotropolis without the rest of the Destructix. He confronted Espio on behalf of the Iron Queen's new empire, and informed him that the "clan wars" were over and they have all been unified under the Iron Queen's rule. Lightning Lynx then encountered Sonic, Sally, Tails, and Monkey Khan when they tried to break the Iron Dominion's ties with the Four Houses. They also met up with the Destructix, lead by Fiona Fox, who wished to bring Lightning Lynx back. His leader, Conquering Storm made a deal with Monkey Khan; if the champion of Mobius wins, the Raiju Clan will break away from the Iron Dominion. Conquering Storm sent out Lightning Lynx as he thought he would battle Monkey Khan, but instead, he had to fight Sonic (As he was considered to be the "Champion of Mobius"), much to his fear. IN an act of desperation, he attacked Sonic in blind fury, rage, and fear, stating that he's finally happy. Feeling sorrow for the poor lynx, Sonic sadly stated that he had friends, family, and a city to save as he spin-dashed Lightning. Disappointed, Conquering Storm proclaimed that Lightning Lynx would be banished once again. Seeing their friend in a depressed state, the Destructix came to his side to console him, Fiona then said that she has a plan to get back at them. With revenge in his eyes, Lightning Lynx left with the Destructix saying "Good. Let's go."[20][21]

Inside Job[]

Fiona made new plans after Lightning's re-recruitment: rescuing her boyfriend Scourge from his confinement in the No Zone's Zone Jail. After making a deal with Dr. Finitevus to get them on the cosmic highway, the group intentionally got themselves arrested by attacking the Zone Cops in extreme hostility. Upon being brought to Zone Jail, where they found Scourge had become weak and rude, leaving Lightning and the others insulted by his outburst and dismissal. Nevertheless, at Fiona's orders they protected Scourge from being executed by Maxx Acorn, though Lightning and the rest believed he was a lost cause.[22][23]

A few days later, Lightning joined the prison's group therapy sessions. Scourge joined in soon after, and with a bit of encouragement from Zouge, Lightning opened up and explained that he had long felt angry due to what he saw as a betrayal of his emotions by Conquering Storm. Manipulating the situation, Scourge appealed to Lightning's sense of revenge, stating he agreed that Conquering Storm's actions were unforgivable, and after inciting a riot in the therapy session, promised the teary-eyed Lightning that he would help him get revenge on his former crush in exchange for his help. Later that night (after Scourge recruited the entire Destructix), Lightning and Flying Frog escaped their cells, knocked out a few guards, and stole a keycard after hiding them. Once Fiona joined them, they scaled the cell block and broke into the command center. While Lightning and Flying dealt fought more guards and Major Znively, Fiona opened the cell doors, altered the gravity, and shut off only their gang's Control Collars before destroying the control stations and escaping into the riot outside. Lightning then joined Scourge as he had Horizont-Al and Verti-Cal's collars removed, and watched in surprise as their powerful demigod forms wreaked havoc in the prison, allowing them to escape to the exercise yard. After Fiona reported back and told them their gear had been stolen, Lightning's superior hearing picked up the sounds of Zone Cop transports approaching the prison, with more teleporting in all over. Scourge then had Lightning listen for any mention of someone attempting to use a Warp Ring and had him work with Predator Hawk to hunt down the thief while the hedgehog covered for them. Lightning then helped lead the rest back to the processing area where they found King Maxx and Jeffrey St. Croix attempting to escape via their stolen Warp Ring, and viciously beat them up before they could escape. Once out of his prison uniform, Lightning and the Destructix escaped through the Warp Ring with Scourge before the F.O.E. Inhibitors could stop them. Arriving in Moebius' Grand Forest, he then waited to complete Finitevus' job, only to hear Scourge proclaim he now lead the Destructix his own plans for them.[1][24][25]

Abilities, personality and trivia[]

Lightning is one of the most mysterious and rare Sonic characters. But, nevertheless, he is the most impulsive in his Destractics gang, whereas by nature Lightning is a braggart and a bully (he also shows off the ostentatious and arrogant manners of an allegedly tough guy). The lynx is loyal, but proud and menacing towards the people around him, although in the depths of his soul he has a soft and kind heart, as well as deeply hidden tender feelings. Lightning is vulnerable (especially when he was thrown 2 times by the head of the Raiju clan herself) and is prone to revenge (he does not just love to take revenge on other people, if you follow his story from Archie comics. Lightning uses revenge in any situation due to its own goals and the goals of its leaders). Also, the lynx does not mind obeying anyone, which can also be concluded about some weaknesses in the personality of Lightning. Still, he is not stupid and not naive, and at the same time he is looking for those who are worthy of him, especially if it concerns a love relationship (but in the near future, Lightning is not planned yet.

ke E:spio, Lighting is a highly trained ninja, making him a master of stealth, and trained in weaponry. Lightning Lynx is capable of moving at high speed, rivaling that of Espio the Chameleon but coming nowhere near the speed of Sonic the Hedgehog. He also possesses highly refined senses, even allowing him to counter Espio's camouflage, with his sense of hearing being strong enough for him to hear almost anything from at least a mile away.

Relationships[]

Bride of the Conquering Storm[]

Conquering storm002

Lightning Lynx and Conquering Storm, from Sonic Universe #15.

Lightning Lynx formally had a crush on the Bride of the Conquering Storm, as shown when he was banished, by him pleading "No... Please! I love..." before being cut off by Conquering Storm, this being the same manner he was banished in the first place. However, after his second banishment, he grew bitter towards Conquering Storm, even joining Scourge under the pretense that he would help him defeat her.[1]

Espio the Chameleon[]

In relation to Espio, Lightning behaves arrogantly and with a note of contempt (this was especially clearly manifested during the events of the 202nd issue of Sonic the hedgehog), as well as with schadenfreude when the chameleon does not believe his words about the subordination of the Shinobi clan to the Iron Queen.

Fiona the Fox[]

Lightning, having suffered the humiliation of his own love feelings from the Storm, does not intend to have another love relationship with anyone, especially with Fiona, who sometimes coquettishly addresses him during some mission (this is very clearly manifested in the 2nd issue of the Scourge Eternal Blackout fan comic). What's most interesting is that Lightning ONLY respects Fiona (for example, calls her "ma'am"), but does not love her. He is not a fool not to notice excessive tenderness from a fox. Moreover, fox Fiona already loves Scorge, and excessive flirtatiousness to other men does not count (according to the logic of all men, including Lightning). Nevertheless, the lynx is ready to protect her, as well as the rest of those who are in his team (i.e., in the Destructics team), based only on a sense of duty to the new boss (there was first a Storm, then a Mammoth Mogul, etc., until it comes to Fiona and Scorge. And since Scorge is just getting used to Destructix after being imprisoned in No Zone, Lightning and his comrades respect only Fiona).
