Attack with a lightning whip.

— Basic attack description, Sonic Forces manual[1]

The Lightning Wispon[1] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Wispon that is themed after the Ivory Wisp. The Lightning Wispon can be used by Avatar, allowing the character to expel an electric whip to destroy Badniks, as well as gifting them the ability to travel airborne through a current of Rings.

Description[]

Appearance[]

Modeled after the Ivory Wisp, the Lightning Wispon is an ivory and gold-colored Wispon shaped as a lightning bolt. It has a black barrel that attaches the lightning bolt-shaped piece to a white handle that allows the wielder to hold it in a comfortable grip. It also has a hole on the bottom of the lightning bolt-shaped piece that resembles the eye of the Ivory Wisp.

Features and abilities[]

As its name implies, the Lightning Wispon can use the power of the Ivory Wisp and essentially allow the Avatar to use the power of the Ivory Lightning Color Power without transforming into the Color Power. The Lightning Wispon can conjure an electrical whip that provides as an offensive attack that the Avatar can use.

Like when using an actual Color Power though, the Lightning Wispon is activated by the Ivory Wisps' cooperation, meaning it cannot be used by users that the Ivory Wisps do not like.[2]

Overview[]

In gameplay, the Lightning Wispon can easily destroy Badniks with ease by using an electrical whip, and makes the Avatar invincible when attacking. Its special attack also allows the user to use its electric weapon to magnetize towards enemies and rings and allows them to travel through a current of a series of enemies or rings. The Lightning Wispon is the only Wispon that is affected by the stages' transitions between the 2.5D and 3D perspectives: in the 2.5D sections, the electric whip is swung up and down, and in 3D sections, the whip is swung from side to side.

The basic Lightning Wispon is unlocked by defeating the Zavok Phantom Copy during his boss fight. By advancing through the game, the player can unlock different variants of the Lightning Wispon. These variants all have the same basic functions, but offer additional skills to the player when equipped:

Tumble with Lightning Wispon

Tumble wielding a Lightning Wispon, from Sonic the Hedgehog #3.

Shortly before the end of the war between the Resistance and the Eggman Empire, Barricade Town, a town that distributed Lightning Wispons, got taken over by the mercenaries Rough and Tumble, who took all the town's Wispons and Wisps for themselves.[3]

Fallout![]

When Sonic and Knuckles entered Barricade Town, the duo eventually clashed with Rough and Tumble. During their battle, Tumble attempted to use a Lightning Wispon against the heroes. However, his Lightning Wispon was left without power when Sonic convinced the Wisps in the villains' Wispons to betray Rough and Tumble by leaving their Wispons. After the two villains were defeated, the town's Lightning Wispons were returned to their owners.[3]

Trivia[]

  • The Lightning Wispon, Drill Wispon and Cube Wispon are the only three Wispons that allow the Avatar to be immune to any damage when tapping/holding R2/Xbox RT2-1/Switch zr. If the player simply presses the button over and over while any attack appears, the player will not receive any hits.
