— Lord Sidewinder, Sonic the Comic #99

Lord Sidewinder[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions. He is a wealthy and power-hungry crime lord with a penchant for snakes, based out of New Tek City on Planet Meridian in the Special Zone. He is also a longtime enemy of the Chaotix Crew.

His family residence, a large, gothic mansion, was on the outskirts of New Tek City, until it was destroyed by Super Sonic. It was decorated with demonic grotesques outside, and the furniture within had skull and snake motifs.

Appearance[]

Lord Sidewinder is incredibly thin, perhaps from age, and has grey skin and long, slick, dark green hair down his back. He habitually wears a monocle in his left eye (his other eye is milky white) and a purple velvet gown resembling a smoking jacket. He carries a wooden cane in the shape of a rearing cobra. He is always seen with at least one or two snakes of different colors, which are usually seen coiled around his cane or around his arm.

History[]

Past[]

At some point in the past, Lord Sidewinder formed a gang, consisting of Bio-Hazard, Proctor Speckle (and his alter ego, Mr. Fry), and his right-hand "man", Lightmare, his daughter, with the intention of conquering Planet Meridian. With the aid of his thugs, Sidewinder committed many crimes, including setting off a nuclear bomb, but was too intelligent to leave any evidence that might convict him, even though the Tek City police believed for sure that he was responsible for the detonation of the bomb.[1] Sidewinder and his gang have also had many run-ins with the Chaotix, who often interfered with his plans.[2]

Heroes & Villains[]

When the genocidal demon, Super Sonic, was separated from Sonic by means of a Star Post, Super Sonic ended up in the Special Zone. He encountered Lord Sidewinder and proposed a deal: if Sidewinder delivered Sonic the Hedgehog to Super Sonic, then Super Sonic would join Sidewinder's gang and help him conquer Planet Meridian. Despite warnings from Lightmare that he could not trust a demon like Super Sonic, Sidewinder accepted the proposal. When Sonic was arrested by the New Tek City police department after being caught associating with the Chaotix, Sidewinder personally visited the police station to pay his bail, much to the anger of Lieutenant Furor, who wished he could arrest Sidewinder as well. Sidewinder brought Sonic back to his family mansion, where he introduced him to his minions, before introducing Super Sonic and telling Sonic about their deal. However, Super Sonic reneged on his end of the deal and destroyed Sidewinder's estate, protecting Sidewinder, his gang, and Sonic with force-fields so that he could enjoy killing them one at a time. Although Sidewinder's associates attempted to subdue Super Sonic, they were easily defeated.[1] The Chaotix then arrived through the Omni-Viewer, leading Sidewinder to take the opportunity to order his henchmen to destroy them once and for all. Sidewinder's thugs then battled the Chaotix, while Sonic fought Super Sonic. Sonic managed to trap Super Sonic in the Omni-Viewer, drawing the Chaotix's attention long enough for Sidewinder and his gang to escape.[2]

The Ultimate Nightmare[]

Sidewinder went to his laboratory in New Tek City, now obsessed with stealing Super Sonic's powers for himself.[3] To this end, he purchased a shrink ray from former Chaotix member, Nack the Weasel, and attacked the Chaotix base in hopes of retaking Super Sonic and enslaving him. Using the shrink ray to shrink themselves, Sidewinder and his gang successfully infiltrated the Chaotix's headquarters and Lightmare incapacitated the Chaotix with her Box of Nightmares. However, she did not notice Sonic, who engaged the group in battle. During the fight, Bio-Hazard accidentally hit Sidewinder with his toxic waste, poisoning him. Lightmare then called for a retreat so that they could get Sidewinder back to his lair and cure him with an antidote.[4] After recovering, Sidewinder then hired Nack himself to steal Super Sonic, but he also failed.[5]

Doomsday[]

When the Chaotix Crew sealed Super Sonic in the heart of the Black Asteroid,[6] Sidewinder dedicated himself to finding Super Sonic by scanning for his energy readings so he could enslave him and use his power to conquer Meridian.[3] Sidewinder saw that Super Sonic was charging up energy to escape from the Black Asteroid. Sidewinder's obsession with controlling Super Sonic's power had become so great, he went insane and believed that after Super Sonic escaped, he would be able to summon Super Sonic to his location and control him with the "power of his mind". Sidewinder told his minions he had a plan to control Super Sonic, which he kept a secret from them. After Lightmare returned to Sidewinder's lair, she lied to him about where she had been, and Sidewinder left with his minions via a rocket.[7] After reaching an asteroid close to the Black Asteroid, Sidewinder told his gang about his crackpot plan to control Super Sonic. However, Mr. Fry and Bio-Hazard saw that Sidewinder had gone insane and his plan would only get them killed. Due to this, they turned against him, though Lightmare defended him. Before the villains could fight amongst themselves, Sonic and the Chaotix arrived and engaged the villains in battle. During the fight, Mr. Fry accidentally struck Lord Sidewinder while trying to hit Sonic and knocked him unconscious. Soon after, his minions were defeated by the heroes and they were all sent to prison.[8]

Hunter & The Hunted[]

Sidewinder later escaped with his crew. He sent Bio-Hazard to kidnap the now amnesiac, pacifistic, and powerless Super Sonic from Mobius,[9] but Sidewinder was tracked to his base by New Tek City Lieutenant Furor and sent back to jail with his team.[10]

Showdown[]

When Dr. Robotnik absorbed the power of the Chaos Emeralds and reshaped reality so that Sonic and Chaotix never existed, he made Sidewinder (now calling himself Overlord Sidewinder) ruler of the Special Zone. He still had Lightmare, Mr. Fry, and Bio-Hazard as his henchmen. Robotnik sent Sonic to the Special Zone and took away his powers so Sidewinder's henchmen could easily destroy him. Overlord Sidewinder pretended to be loyal to the omnipotent Robotnik, but whispered to Lightmare that after they destroyed Sonic, he planned on finding a way to steal Robotnik's powers so that he could rule the universe himself. However, the omnipresent Robotnik overheard this and turned Sidewinder and all of his minions to stone, as a warning to anyone else who might think of betraying him.[11] When Robotnik was stripped of his powers and reality was returned to normal, Sidewinder was presumably turned back to normal and returned to prison, just like Mr. Fry.[12]

Personality[]

Although Lord Sidewinder acts polite, he is a cruel and ruthless person, willing to do whatever immoral thing it takes to get what he wants. Sidewinder is extremely power-hungry, desiring to conquer Planet Meridian. Since meeting Super Sonic, Sidewinder has become obsessed with obtaining the power of a god, either by enslaving a godlike being or stealing their powers. Sidewinder is very clever, having committed crimes in the past while leaving no evidence to incriminate him.[1] However, at some point, his lust for power drove him insane and made him delusional, thinking that he would be able to control Super Sonic with his mind.[8] Sidewinder's desperate desire for power also makes him very reckless, leading him to take stupid and dangerous risks.[1][9] He is also an ungrateful backstabber, as seen when he planned on betraying Dr. Robotnik and stealing his new godly powers after he freed him from prison and made him ruler of the Special Zone.[12] Sidewinder has an affinity for snakes, owning at least eight pet snakes which he allows to wrap themselves around his body, possessing a snake-shaped cane, and keeping snake-themed decorations in his mansion.

Powers and abilities[]

Lord Sidewinder is a brilliant inventor, able to build a nuclear bomb,[2] a rocket,[7] a dimensional teleporter, and a tracker which could track Super Sonic, and even determine his location from another dimension.[9]

Trivia[]

  • A sidewinder is a type of venomous rattlesnake (Crotalus cerastes), as well as a slang term for an untrustworthy person.
  • Lord Sidewinder's habit of wearing a monocle may be a reference to the monocled cobra.
