Lyric's Lair

Lyric's Lair (リリックの基地 Ririkku no Kichi?, lit. "Base of Lyric") is the ninth and final area of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. It is the central headquarters of Lyric the Last Ancient. It stands as a nightmarish and highly technological fortress in a lifeless waste, and is filled with death traps and robot armies. Built to Lyric's taste, its is a terrifying example of Lyric's desire to only populate the world with technology and exterminate all organic life forms. It is accessed after clearing Sky Citadel.

When Lyric stole the Chaos Crystals from Team Sonic, the team pursued Lyric to his lair for a final showdown to stop him from activating his Sentinel army and wiping the planet clean of all organic life.

Description[]

Easily the darkest setting in the game, Lyric's Lair lies in a barren, dead and rocky black wasteland with cliffs, small mountaintops, plateaus and cracked gorges. Amidst the area is a lake with murky waters. The sky above is completely overcast by dense grey clouds, with lighting appearing occasionally. The horizon and gorges are covered in rust-colored fog.

Around the landscape are several structures that make up Lyric's Lair. These structures are made of black metal with glowing red outlines and circuits. The lair looks like a cross between a technological fortress and industrial plant, with buildings resembling storage facilities, arching spires and towers. Some of them even have crescent-shaped spires. There are as well metallic stations resembling platforms, silo-shaped towers and pipes that wind through the land like a network. The deeper into the level the player goes, the more closely packed the lair become until it is nothing but a mechanized labyrinth. The insides of the lair is heavily industrialized and is operated by Minions.

In addition to its technological layout, the lair has computer terminals and screens everywhere, automatic doors, and roads that instantly teleport into view. The Ancients' markings are as well engraved into several surfaces. Inside the lair also lie several immensely large cylinder-shaped rooms with a turbine for floors and Driller Worms rampaging through them. Some doors also depict Lyric's symbol which resembles a slithering snake. At the end of the level lies Lyric's Sentinel army and four receptors for the Chaos Crystals.

Story[]

A thousand years ago, Lyric assembled an army of Sentinels at his lair. From there, he planned to unleash his army which would destroy anything organic and replace it with metal and machinery. Before he could activate it with the Chaos Crystals however, Lyric was imprisoned by the Ancients, leaving his lair and Sentinels abandoned.

In the present, Lyric returned to his lair with the Chaos Crystals. Shortly after, Team Sonic crashed at Lyric's Lair in the Tornado and fought their way to Lyric with the unexpected help from Q-N-C. As Lyric activated his Sentinel army with the Chaos Crystals, he noticed Sonic and his gang had arrived. Annoyed at their presence, Lyric told Sonic that he finally knew his weakness: his friends. Sonic claimed otherwise however, saying they are his strength, and they begin their final battle.

At the brink of defeat, Lyric noticed Team Sonic's Enerbeams and used his armor's device to have the Enerbeams ensnare them. As Lyric tried to finish the heroes off though, Eggman appeared and shot Lyric from behind with his mech, deactivating the Enerbeams. Working together, Team Sonic tied up Lyric as he tried to escape. Just then, a time portal opened nearby and out came Shadow, who was ready to fight Sonic again. When he saw that they had stopped Lyric though, he left Team Sonic with his approval. Sonic then removed the technopathy device on Lyric's armor and had Knuckles throw it away, shutting down the Sentinels. With this victory, it was time to go back to the VIllage and celebrate.

A while later, Lyric's device was found by Eggman who installed it into his wrist controller and laughed maniacally as he pushed it, reactivating Metal Sonic in the process.

Gameplay[]

In Lyric's Lair, the player travels from the outskirts of the lair and into its center. Like the other areas in the game, Lyric's Lair includes speed level sections, where the player runs down a long path with speed-enhancing gimmicks while avoiding hazardous obstacles, and as well slower-paced areas for exploration and combat. It also features puzzles that the player must solve with the Enerbeam mechanic and Buttons. Additionally, there are elaborate tiles puzzles where the player must find and step on a white tile, and then press a series of blue tiles in the correct order to proceed.

Unlike most other levels, Lyric's Lair has nearly no gimmicks for the playable characters' character actions. Those there are found, are hidden and delegated to collecting collectibles. Such gimmicks include Spin Ramps for Sonic, Tails Vents for Tails and Balance Beams for Amy. The primary damage-inducing hazards in Lyric's Lair are moving red laser grids. These lasers block paths, make paths more dangerous, or form (sometimes still) grids that partially blocks Buttons or tile puzzles, making it more dangerous for the player to use them. Some grids' movements even speed up as the player solves the puzzles. Additionally, there are force fields that can block the player's paths or puzzles: the blue ones are harmless, but the red ones cause slight damage to both player and enemies upon contact.

Aside from obstacles, there also lie Commando Husks of the toughest Destruction Troops around this level, which the Parasite Snakes can possess, thus creating stronger and tougher enemies.

Overview[]

LyricsLair1

The beginning of Lyric's Lair.

At the beginning of this level, the player is control of all of Team Sonic. The player must leave the wreckage of the the Tornado behind and head northwest from the starting point. There, the player will find a Button hidden underneath some crates. Press it to activate some nearby Bounce Pads. They will take the characters to a new area where the passage forward is blocked by a red force-field. The player will also come under attack by Destruction Troops that must be defeated to lower the force-field. Beyond the unveiled path lies the level's first speed section. As the player proceeds down this speed section, they must watch out for lasers that can be avoided by switching lanes. After being send forward by a series of Bounce Pads, the player will come to a stop on top of a high road with a large Button in front of the characters. Press this Button to make the missing stretch of road appear ahead, and proceed down it to resume the speed section. Shortly after restarting the speed section, the player can use an Ener-Rail to take a shortcut along the route. Eventually, the player will end up in another area where Destruction Troops will lower the plaforms needed to get out of this area. After defeating all the Destruction Troops, Q-N-C will appear and make the platforms in the area rise back up a few moments after his arrival. After using the plaforms to scale the ledge ahead, the player will come across a passage with laser grids. Proceed between these lasers carefully to reach a circular pad with four Buttons on it and lasers sweeping over them. Proceed to press these Buttons in-between lasers, but watch out: for each Button pressed, the lasers sweeping the Buttons will move faster. After all four Buttons are pressed, they will turn off the lasers and the red force-field blocking the passage.

Use the Bounce Pad in the middle of the Buttons to reach and swing between Zip Targets to reach the next area. There, pull the latches on the power source with the Enerbeam. This will make a wave of Destruction Troops appear. After defeating them, wait a few moments for Q-N-C to hack the terminal and make some latches for the Enerbeams appear. Pull these latches to move a Tube piece into position. Worth noting is that there is also a passage to a hidden room next to it. After that, another wave of Destruction Troops will appear. After they have all be destroyed, Q-N-C will have finished hacking another terminal, thereby making Enerbeam latches appear next to him. Pull these latches with the Enerbeam to finish moving the last Tube piece into place. Use then the finished Tube to reach the area on the ledge above. There, Q-N-C will make the bridge into another speed section reappear. Enter then this speed section to get inside of Lyric's Lair. Upon arriving there, the player has to solve a tile puzzle while two red lasers sweep the floor with the tiles on it. After solving the puzzle, Bounce Pads will be unlocked ahead of it. Use them to climb to the ledge above and take out the Destruction Troops up there. Once they are gone, another tile puzzle will activate nearby. However, after solving it for the first time, another wave of Destruction Troops will enter the area. Destroy them to make the previous tile puzzle reset, leaving it for the player to solve it again. This time however, a net of lasers will sweep the puzzle while the player tries to solve it. Once it is solved, an Enerbeam latch will be revealed. Pull it to make some nearby plaforms rise up and lower the red force-field blocking the path out of the area. At the end of this path, the player enters another speed section. During this section however, Driller Worms will destroy the road, thereby altering the path Team Sonic is led down of.

The section in Lyric's lair with the three protected tile puzzles.

Eventually, the player will enter an open area with a Checkpoint where there are three floor tile puzzles to solve. These puzzles are protected by both lasers and red force-fields covering them. However, Q-N-C will release the emergency switches, allowing the player to lower the red force-fields. The nearest tile puzzle will have its red force-field removed when the player pulls the Enerbeam latch below Q-N-C. The player must then solve the tile puzzle while avoiding stationary lasers. After that, Q-N-C will move to the next terminal, which has two lasers sweeping the area in front of the Enerbeam latch below Q-N-C. Pull this latch to remove the red force-field from the nearest tile puzzle. The player must then solve this tile puzzle while dodging the lasers sweeping the tiles from their center point. After that, Q-N-C will move over to the final terminal and make an Enerbeam latch appear below him. Pull this latch to make the red force-field over the tile puzzle to the right disappear. The player then has to solve this puzzle while dodging both stationary lasers and a single laser sweeping the puzzle.

After all three puzzles have been solved, a door will open nearby. Behind this door is an Ener-Rail that the player must ride into a small elevator. Here, the player has to defeat a group of Destruction Troops in order to make a passage open to the next speed section. This section is quite long and has several alternate routes along it in the form of Ener-Rails, and obstacles such as laser grids. After getting through the first loop however, the player has the option to catch and ride along an Ener-Rail. If the player fails to latch onto it though, they will have to go through a section with oblong platforms that can be moved vertically by pressing Buttons. Regardless, the player will eventually return to the speed section. Soon after, after passing through the speed section's fourth loop, the player can activate a Bounce Pad with an overhead panel and use it to reach an Ener-Rail to shorten the character's trip. Regardless, the player will inevitably arrive on a plaform with a large Button that must be pressed to activate an Ener-Rail. Ride then down this gimmick while avoiding spiked pendulums to arrive on another road segment with a large Button. Press that Button to make the road ahead appear and resume the speed section from there. After that, the player will hit some Bounce Pads that will send them to an area with Destruction Troops. Clear out the Destruction Troops there and wait then for Q-N_C to raise some plaforms. Use then these platforms to reach the Button on the wall above and press it. The player then has to use a few Zip Targets to reach a Button on another ledge that will lower the red force-field blocking the path.

LyricsLair3

The last tile puzzle in Lyric's Lair.

In the next area, the player must solve a tile puzzle while a rotating laser sweeps the floor. Once done, the lasers will shut off and the player has to pull the Enerbeam latches in front of the tile puzzle to more a Tube piece into place. The player then has to solve the tile puzzle again, but with the rotating laser sweepers back online and Destruction Troops attacking the characters. After solving the puzzle, the lasers will shut off again and the player can pull another set of Enerbeam latches in front of the tile puzzle to move another Tube piece into place. The player then has to solve the tile puzzle for a third time, but with the rotating laser sweepers back online and more tricky Destruction Troops swarming the characters. Once that puzzle is solved, pull the latches in front of the tile puzzle again to move the last Tube piece into place. Use then the newly-made Tube to go to the area above. There, the player must press four more Buttons again that are protected by rapidly rotating lasers sweeping over them. This will open up for another speed section, where the player will have to catch an Ener-Rail quickly, as a Driller Worm will destroy the incoming section of the road. The characters will then be taken to another area that splits in two. After a brief cutscene there, the player must go through the opened door on the right. There, the last speed section can be found. When entering this section, the player must first run straight up a hill, before being send flying into the air. While in the air, the player can grab onto a Zip Target and press the Button in front of it to create a route to Lyric. If the player fails to grab the Zip Target though, they must go through a small section with Bounce Pads to reach the aforementioned Button. Then, after the player has run through numerous corkscrews and past several lasers, the characters will land on the platform where Lyric is fought.

Boss[]

Lyric the Last Ancient

The boss of Lyric's Lair is Lyric the Last Ancient, a malevolent Ancient bent on global destruction. He can be fought directly after reaching the end of Lyric's Lair. For this boss battle, the player controls all of Team Sonic.

In battle, Lyric utilizes a variety of attacks, such as ground pounds, lasers, bombs, hammering pillars, slashes and shockwaves, all while enemies swarm the arena. Avoid his attacks and hit him when possible until he collapses. Use then the Enerbeam on him to open a path to the Chaos Crystals and take them back. Repeat this pattern four times to defeat Lyric for good.
