Masafumi Ogata is a former composer who composed for several early Sonic games, most notably Sonic the Hedgehog CD alongside Naofumi Hataya. He was also credited under the alias "Gatao" (which is an anagram of Ogata) in the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which contains an early version of Sonic - You Can Do Anything as the background music for the stage Green Hills Zone, almost certainly made before the version in Sonic CD.

He left Sega in 1995 and found work with Sound AMS until 2001. He became a freelance composer, but then quit the music industry in 2006, following work on Summon Night 4. It is unknown why he is no longer composing.
