Masher (ガブッチョ Gabucco?) is a fish-type badnik created by Dr. Robotnik which first appears in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It is a mechanical fish, resembling the Chopper from original Sonic the Hedgehog. Mashers will jump up and down by a bridge in each zone that it has has appeared in.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Mashers make their first appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, as they are found jumping on waterfalls of Emerald Hill Zone. Much like Chopper, Mashers can only hit the player by simply running towards them on the bridge. Mashers can be easily defeated by doing Spin Jump, Spin Attack or Spin Dash.
An unnamed Badnik, which is featured at jumping on waterwalls of Green Hill Zone in Sonic Blast, looks and acts almost identical to Mashers. Unlike Mashers from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, however, these Badniks don't have animal friends inside of them.
Sonic Pocket Adventure
Mashers make another appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure, as being featured at Neo South Island Zone. With red and white coloring, Mashers have almost same pattern from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, even having animal friends inside of them again.
Mashers are successors of Choppers and heavily based on them. It has red metallic body while its lower body is colored orange. It has stretching pelvic fins each side, while above the body is set dorsal fin and white caudal fin. Like Choppers, it has serrated teeth on its mouth, white eyes with black pupils and two metallic buttons close to the mouth.
Like Choppers, the only attack movement these Badniks is jumping from waterfall in front of its target on the bridge while it keeps waving its mouth all the time. The only way to get hit on them is to run forward these Badniks. Usually smaller waterfalls have one Masher and bigger ones have two Mashers jumping on it.
Appearances in other media
Sonic the Comic
Masher makes its only appearance in Fleetway's Sonic the Comic issue 79's story "Grounded", as being part of Dr. Robotnik's Badnik army. In the issue, a single Masher moves underwater of Aquatic Ruin Zone, attempting to finish off Tails, who got caught by Spider-Moth web and is unable to fly or swim with his tails. However Masher accidentally cut the webbing around Tails' tails, who got now the change to swim away.
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
Mashers appear briefly in the unaired pilot episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog along with few Chop-Chops and one Octus as leader. All of them are possibly sent by Doctor Robotnik to catch Sonic underwater. During the chase, Sonic leads Badnik group to seaweeds while he swims through them at high speed. Badniks however got stuck on them as they try to follow him.
