Max the Monkey[1] is an anthropomorphic monkey. Max was originally supposed to be one of the band members in Sonic the Hedgehog Band, along with Sonic the Hedgehog, Mach the Rabbit, Sharps the Parakeet, Vector the Crocodile and would appear playing the music at the Sound Test with other band members before being dropped in the final release of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991).

Overview[]

During the early development of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Max was originally meant to be the band's bass player. In several sketches featured in SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis Collected Works art book, Max was also meant to appear in more than the original Sound Test, which included the early SEGA screen and the original ending where he would celebrate the victory with Sonic, the other band members and the Animals.[2] Like the other band members, he was dropped from the final release of the game due to time constraints.[3]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Max appears as the bass guitarist for Mina Mongoose's band, the Forget Me Knots, along with Mach (the drummer) and Sharps (the guitarist), and has since been a recurring member of her band.

One day, Max would appear outside of Amy's house and read one of her many comic stories that Tails showed to the entire village. While there, he noticed Amy acting distraught when Sonic took a look at her work.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Max's attire consists of red shoes accented with white straps, similar to Sonic's shoes.
  • In his concept art, Max has a tri-crooked tail, somewhat similar to Knuckles the Echidna's tail.

The composer for the game was one of the members of Dreams Come True, a famous Japanese band, so we wanted to do something special for the game's music. See, we wanted to have a separate sound-test screen with an animation of Sonic break-dancing while a "Sonic Band" played the game music. We were working on the images, and had enough space left on the cartridge memory for it, but once again time constraints prevented us from putting it in the program. So what should we do with that leftover space? I suddenly had an epiphany! It said to me ... "SE-GA!" It came from our TV commercials, and that became the game's startup sound. I thought it made a good impression when you heard it, right? Though to fit it in, we had to delete all the break-dancing picture data we had made up to that point. Oshima was heartbroken, since we didn't need his pictures anymore. But seriously, that sound alone took up 1/8 of the 4 megabit ROM! Ah, those were the days..."
