The Mega Chopper[1] (カプカプ[2] Kapukapu?, lit. "Kapu-Kapu") is an enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, piranha-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman.

Appearance[]

Based on piranhas, the Mega Choppers have a red body and silver caudal fins. They have completely yellow eyes and a line of silver dots over the mouth. They have sharp, serrated teeth. Their name is a misnomer, as the Mega Choppers are actually much smaller in comparison with other Badniks.

Game appearances[]

Sonic 3 & Knuckles[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Mega Choppers appear as enemies that are found swimming around in the underwater areas or leaping up from below the floor in Hydrocity Zone.

Unlike most Badniks, a Mega Chopper does not damage the player directly; instead, it latches onto the playable characters when they get close and drains them of their Rings at a steady rate until they are gone, resulting in death. In addition, as long as the Mega Chopper is attached, the character's speed is reduced and they will be unable to use the Spin Jump, Spin Attack or Spin Dash; additionally, if Knuckles The Echidna is on a wall and a Mega Chopper latches onto him, he will not be able to climb the wall or jump off.

To throw off the Mega Chopper, one must quickly press left and right on Controlpadds. Alternatively, the player can force the playable character into a Spin Attack by entering tunnels (in Act 1) or the turquoise half-pipe slides (in Act 2). One can also let themselves get damaged so the Mega Chopper will fall off. Otherwise, Mega Chopper can be defeated using the Spin Jump or Spin Attack before getting bitten or by having Invincibility. When Mega Choppers are destroyed, they will release the Animals inside of them and award the player with 100 points.

Sonic Mania[]

MegaChopper Mania In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the Mega Choppers appear as enemies. In terms of design, they look exactly like they did in their debut. In these games, they only appear in the underwater sections of Hydrocity Zone.

In gameplay, the Mega Choppers behave just like in their debut game: they latch onto the playable characters and drain them of their Rings until the characters either die or shake them off. Also, upon destroying a Mega Chopper, it will release an Animal.

Powers and abilities[]

Mega Choppers are expert swimmers. They can also latch onto their prey and drain them of their Rings.

Trivia[]

  • The Mega Chopper has some characteristics in common with the Chopper from the original Sonic the Hedgehog and the Chop Chop from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • The Mega Chopper's Japanese name is identical to the Kapu Kapu from Chu Chu Rocket, another Sega series. However, "kapu-kapu" is also "paku-paku", the Japanese onomatopeia for eating, with two letters switching places.
