Metal Robotnik (ブラックエッグマン Burakku Egguman?, lit. "Black Eggman") is a mech that appears in Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. It was a giant robotic version of Robotnik, created by the evil doctor to destroy Sonic and Tails. Robotnik claimed that Metal Robotnik has conquered his peaceful hometown, Robotropolis, in order to lure Sonic to a trap.
Metal Robotnik is a giant red, gray and black egg shaped robot with red eyes and interchangeable arm attachments. It also has missile launchers built into its chest area and expandable wings and a jet-pack on his back.
It is introduced as a rival of Robotnik whom conquered his city (called Robotropolis in the English dub, but Eggmanland in the original) with his demonic robots and sabotaged the city's Robot Generator, which generates power to the city. This is set to cause a giant explosion due to the excessive energy being produced.
When Sonic and Tails approach the Ancient Ruins it attacks them as soon as it sees them. It forces them off a bridge and they try to fool him into thinking they are dead. It sees through this and fools them into believing it fell for it, but surprises them as they try to leave and starts to pelt them with his Glue weapon and Tails becomes stuck to the fence. It fires some missiles at Sonic, but he manages to grab and steer one of them back into him. Sonic gets stuck on the floor afterwards and it starts to cave in and fill with water. Just as Metal Robotnik is about to shoot Sonic, Knuckles knocks him to the ground and frees Tails. During the battle with Knuckles, it runs out of ammo so it resorts to picking him up and squeezing him. After Sonic is pulled out of the hole by Tails, he slices Metal Robotnik's arm off with a Spin Dash and then impales him twice as it tries to fly away. Sparks emit and then it explodes and falls into the water far out of their view. Robotnik and Sara emerge from the vehicle, unharmed.
Metal Robotnik comes back one more time in nonfunctional form as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles reach Robotropolis. It appears it is perfectly alright until Robotnik's minions drop him. It crumbles to the ground and Robotnik emerges from inside him, revealing his true plan to get Sonic's data and put it in Hyper Metal Sonic.
Powers and abilities
Metal Robotnik was a highly powerful mech. It possessed greath super strength, enough to easily destroying a bridge, and had rocket boosters and wings which granted it flight and let it move at speeds comparable to Sonic.
Metal Robotnik came with a large assortment of armaments. Its fingers could convert into Gatling guns and its arms had interchangeable attachments which including machine guns and pounding fists. Additionally, it could launch missiles from its waist area, powerful enough to level a small city area, and it could fire glue bomb from its rear.
Metal Robotnik was made of a tough polymer alloy armor, making it highly resilient to damage. In fact, Sonic was unable to even dent its armor with blunt attacks and it could take a direct hit from one of its own missiles and still function.
In other media
Metal Robotnik appears briefly in Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog, as its appearance is slightly different with blue colored body and yellow cloak in Sonic the Hedgehog #101. In issue's story, it is a manually controlled robot made by Robotnik to help in the capture of Princess Sara, but interference arrived in the form of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles after he captured the princess. After Metal Robotnik used its laser eyes to attack Sonic and Tails, Knuckles flew in to their rescue, but somehow, duplicates of Metal Robotnik appeared to challenge them. However the scene changes to another one and all characters are never seen in comics. (StH #101)
